"Mr. Barton, what's wrong? Do you need me to call someone?"
Shade sprang to his feet and wanted to approach him, but Joey Barton immediately waved him away:
"I'm fine, I'm fine. Don't call anyone. I've merely overused my eyes. This strange talent cannot be used often. Yes, Gift of Fate always comes with other costs."
Though he said he was fine, he still covered his face with one hand, his entire body trembling.
The "quiet" Iluna did not rise like Shade. Her eyes swept over the surroundings, then she lightly hooked a finger of her right hand. The Rhodes Card tossed onto the tea table immediately flipped over under the pull of a spell, and Shade's gaze was drawn to its front.
The front of the card contained only white, black, and cool tones near those two colors. A humanoid figure with its back to the viewer stood at the center of the card. It wore a black hooded robe, and its exposed head was a skull with bony spikes protruding from the back. Its right hand held a sharp scythe, while its left held a short knife stained with filth. Both hands were lumps of rotting flesh.
The background was filled with densely packed, spire-shaped gravestones, with indistinct white shadows lurking among them. Farther in the distance was a stretch of water whose end was not depicted.
The gravestone beneath the feet of the figure occupying the center of the card was the clearest. It bore patterns like bone fragments, and Shade somehow interpreted their meaning—
