Background

Mia was originally owned by Miss Mia Goode. A previous detective had located the orange cat and left her at Good Man Peter's Pet Shop, but she vanished again before Shade Hamilton could collect her, turning a simple retrieval commission into an investigation. 25

After Mia was recovered, Shade discovered that Miss Goode had moved away. Through her elderly neighbor, Goode sent five pounds and asked him to care for Mia temporarily because she was allergic to cats; she promised to reclaim her within six months. Shade accepted, arranged goat-milk deliveries, and began keeping Mia at 6 Saint Derain Square. 27

Goode repeatedly extended the arrangement due to her illness, family decline, and obligations in her hometown, while continuing to send letters, allowances, and requests for updates on Mia's condition. 59 375 553 844 Shade gradually became attached to the cat but avoided exploiting Goode's circumstances to claim ownership. 375 549

When Goode later visited Shade's home in his absence, she spent time with Mia and agreed that the cat should remain with Shade while she rebuilt her hometown.
