Background / History
Sylvia was born to a common family. Her teacher, a Great Witch who died in an experimental accident three years before Sylvia’s introduction, left her a substantial inheritance—enough to cover roughly a decade of living expenses. The Witch Council does not provide its members with living expenses, leaving Sylvia responsible for securing her own future. 838
She developed exceptional talent in both spatial power and mathematics. Before becoming widely involved with Shade Hamilton, she had already published multiple mathematics papers as first author and gained enough standing in ordinary academia to be employed by the royal family as a tutor for princesses. 864
Sylvia became Princess Margaret Anjou’s tutor partly as a calculated political investment. She believed that, even if Margaret never became queen, the princess would become an influential political figure. 861
Appearance
Sylvia is a young-looking witch with short black hair, fair skin, and striking golden eyes. She is frequently associated with jasmine-scented “Witches’ Taste” perfume and dresses in carefully chosen formal clothing. 859 870 2904
- Often wears black or dark-colored long dresses with lace decoration. 870
- Has appeared in a broad-brimmed hat decorated with petals and thin gauze. 870 943
- Her followers and associates commonly recognize her through her distinctive jasmine perfume. 859
- Favors refined, fashionable clothing and later incorporates her own synthetic fabrics into her wardrobe and products. 1274 2904
Personality
Sylvia is scholarly, efficient, and intensely curious. Her interest in Shade begins with his unusual spatial abilities, mathematical knowledge, and status as a man unaffected by the Witch Curse; she approaches these matters as problems to be investigated rather than reasons for fear. 861 864
Though she can be ruthless when confronting threats, Sylvia is also politically practical. During the White King Club incident, she immediately prioritized separating Margaret’s delegation from the murder, arranging altered memories, repaired evidence, and a controlled handover of the captured Ring Arcanist. 859
She values intelligence and originality highly, particularly in mathematics and spatial research. Her standards for apprentices are strict: she refused Margaret as a formal apprentice because the princess lacked sufficient spatial and mathematical talent, while repeatedly admiring Shade’s self-taught aptitude. 872 1993
Sylvia is financially cautious because of her modest origins and uncertain long-term income. This caution develops into entrepreneurship, investment, and eventually a major synthetic-fiber business. 838 1053 1809
Abilities & Skills
Spatial Sorcery
Sylvia specializes in spatial power as the Witch Council’s Great Witch of Space.
- Can attack, restrain, and confine targets at range; she immobilized a mass of hostile vines in a state likened to a three-dimensional photograph. 859
- Uses spatial movement to rapidly reposition herself and others. 1853
- Can create or identify spatial anomalies, establish waypoints, and construct Teleportation Gates. 1078 2881
- Cooperates with Shade through Space Perception to survey large areas for spatial irregularities. 1853
- Maintains hidden spatial refuges and safe houses, including an artificial spatial anomaly concealing an island residence. 3926
- Can alter the appearance, clothing, height, and weight of herself and Shade through spatial magic. 877
Spatial Research and Witch Tower Authority
Sylvia’s ancestral witch tower on Fatumonst Snow Mountain serves as a research base, library, laboratory, and fortified spatial nexus. 3171 3832
- Maintains the tower despite the considerable expense of doing so. 3171
- Can operate its teleportation network during major crises. 3832
- Discovered that the tower possesses authority over space within Fatumonst Snow Mountain. 3832
- Prepared personal-seal runestones that can return allies directly to the tower when crushed. 3832
Mathematics and Academic Research
Sylvia is an accomplished contemporary mathematician whose research directly informs her Witchcraft and Miracle Techniques. 864 3170
- Published several academic papers as first author and earned a strong reputation in ordinary scholarly circles. 864
- Uses topology, number theory, probability, and other mathematical principles in magical experimentation. 3170
- Evaluates prospective students through advanced mathematics, including geometry, functions, imaginary numbers, groups, and sets. 872
- Continues to study new concepts from Shade, including determinants and imaginary-number differentiation. 2302 3165
Witch Secret Art: Sword of Fate
Sylvia developed Sword of Fate by combining probability theory with Miracle Techniques. 3170 3866
- Against a specified target, repeated failures accumulate toward an inevitable success. 3866
- The technique’s certainty requires enough preceding “misses,” making Fate both its mechanism and its danger. 3866
- She used the art with Ellie’s assistance during the War of Fate. 3866
Divination
Sylvia has practical divination ability despite not specializing in it. 871
- Uses a calculation-based card method involving selected numbers, dates, time, and a final random card choice. 871
- Successfully divined an “Unexpected Gift” for Shade. 871
Soul Interrogation
Sylvia can capture and interrogate souls, aided by the Sage-level relic Soul Everlasting Lamp. 877
- Captured the soul of a defeated Nine-Ring Arcanist. 877
- Prevented the soul from becoming an Evil Spirit while extracting information about the Truth Society’s conspiracy. 877
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Soul Everlasting Lamp — Sage-level relic used in the capture, suppression, and interrogation of souls. 877
- Ancient Witch’s Golden Ring – Left Two — Allows her to influence the random spatial-transfer rule of the Wall of Disorder, though she cannot use that method to pass through the wall herself. 3256
- Personal-seal runestones — Emergency return items linked to her Fatumonst Snow Mountain tower. 3832
- Harmonica — Used during a ritual offering to summon a Keeper of Secrets. 1025
Relationships
- Shade Hamilton — Initially a prospective apprentice whose spatial and mathematical talent fascinated Sylvia; later her research partner and lover. She ultimately asks him to call her simply “Sylvia” as a personal distinction. 864 1078 2904
- Princess Margaret Anjou — Tutor and political patron. Sylvia initially developed Margaret as a follower and investment, but refused to make her a formal spatial apprentice because Margaret lacked the required talent. 861 872
- Miss Galina Cavendish — Fellow Great Witch, Council colleague, and political ally. Galina encouraged Sylvia to invest in Shade and supported closer cooperation between them. 861
- Sylvia’s deceased teacher — A Great Witch who died in an experimental accident and left Sylvia both an inheritance and the Fatumonst Snow Mountain tower. 838 3171
- Vanessa Benanis — Fellow Great Witch and ally. Sylvia cooperates with Vanessa during operations on Fatumonst Island and in the War of Fate. 3256 3866
- Megan Edwardz and Audrey — Allied witches whose unusual dual-soul condition Sylvia finds surprising and whose motivations she analyzes sympathetically. 1795 1809
- Her followers — A small group, many of whom possess spatial talent and academic backgrounds; one known follower is a mathematics graduate student at Wilundell University. 1944 3168
Story Role / Major Arcs
White King Club Incident
Sylvia’s arrival ends the confrontation between Shade, Viscount Bernhardt, and a Ring Arcanist. She restrains the transformed enemy, petrifies Ms. Martha to preserve secrecy, and designs a cover story that protects Margaret’s delegation while directing evidence toward the Orthodox Church. 859
Shade’s Prospective Apprenticeship
After recognizing Shade’s exceptional mathematical ability and spatial potential, Sylvia offers to accept him as her apprentice. Shade refuses, but the two begin a sustained teacher-like exchange centered on Witch power, Space Miracle Techniques, and mathematics. 863 864
Margaret’s Tutor and Mentor
Sylvia guides Margaret’s Ring Arcanist development while remaining firm that Margaret cannot become her spatial apprentice. She later helps direct Margaret toward Miss Benanis, whose Earth-aligned system is better suited to the princess. 872 1221
Pantanal and Truth Society Conflict
Sylvia aids Shade in investigating the Pantanal conspiracy, defeats a Nine-Ring enemy, captures his soul for interrogation, and protects Margaret during the Truth Society’s attack at Rothschild Manor. 877 878
Synthetic Fiber Enterprise
Drawing on Shade’s suggestions and Fifth Epoch records, Sylvia invents artificial synthetic fiber and receives the Enlightenment Spirit Rune [Weaving]. Her nylon business becomes commercially successful, though she later limits supply to avoid directly provoking Wilundell’s established textile interests. 1274 1289 3165
Fatumonst Snow Mountain and the War of Fate
Sylvia’s tower becomes a strategic transportation and refuge point during the conflict on Fatumonst Island. She maintains Teleportation Gates, grants emergency access through her runestones, and deploys Sword of Fate during the final confrontation. 3832 3866
Gray-headed Eagle II Investigation
Sylvia stages Margaret’s apparent kidnapping as a complex detective game for Shade. She uses her safe house, spatial refuge, followers, and scripted clues to test Shade’s investigative ability and devotion before revealing herself as the “kidnapper.” 3926
Notable Quotes
“The Speaker said I have the talent to reach the Thirteenth Step.” 864
“From now on, I want you to call me ‘Sylvia’ directly. That is what makes me different from them all!” 2904
Trivia
- Sylvia’s first synthetic-fiber products caused a sensation among Wilundell’s nobility before her factory reached mass production. 1809
- She considers stable weekly income preferable to large but irregular Ring Arcanist earnings. 871
- Her followers are unusually well suited to spatial work; this helped them resist effects that incapacitated other followers during the Green Lake Island incident. 1944
- Although she is one of the youngest and least senior Great Witches, other witches compare exceptional talent to being “a second Sylvia.” 3924
