Ch. 3621Those Who Seek War
Chapter Summary: “Those Who Seek War”
Plot Points and Events
- Shade confronts three surviving members of The Tyranny Club after they and their companions are attacked by the Infinite Snake at the Ice Lake.
- Emilia and Angelina explain that the cultists had been investigating the frozen lake and attempting to break through its ice. They had heard the cultists mention searching for something, but the ice showed no magical, ritual, or Rune Lock traces.
- After the snake appeared, Emilia and Angelina helped contain the situation while sending for Shade. Shade and Audrey then subdued the remaining cultists.
- The group relocates to the cultists’ nearby camp. Shade finds survey reports about northern Fatumonst Island but no valuable artifacts. Audrey treats several critically injured cultists and gathers the dead.
- Shade interrogates the three surviving cultists. Though they initially refuse to speak, the leader agrees to answer three questions in exchange for their lives.
- Shade correctly deduces that they were searching for an underground passage beneath the Ice Lake, connected to the star that fell into Starfall Bay—the “Falling Star” or “Destiny of War.”
- The cultists reveal that:
- The Tyranny Club is searching for the Falling Star and learned of it through a “sage” in the Green Lake Region, clearly connected to Audrey’s Ancestor.
- One-third of the cult’s forces have been deployed to the Starfall Bay region, mostly hidden on ships. One group searches for the passage, while another was prepared to assassinate people and disrupt peace negotiations between Delarion and Kasonlik.
- The cult knows that the Falling Star Beast, or War Beast, has a weakness, but the leader does not know the details. After the beast is weakened, something important can supposedly be extracted from it and placed in an ordinary person, triggering a massive war throughout the Material World.
- Shade concludes that the cultists are likely intended as guides or sources of clues for the candidates in the next stage of the conflict. He considers seeking more information from Durut Giles, Lust Edwardz, or Jarvis Edwardz.
Character Developments
- Shade demonstrates sharp deduction and control during the interrogation. He recognizes the cultists’ connection to the Falling Star and uses the threat of death, Audrey’s intimidation, and his identity as a God Summoner to secure cooperation.
- Audrey acts compassionately by treating the injured cultists, despite their allegiance to a dangerous organization. She also plays the role of the threatening interrogator and reacts uneasily when the cultists mention their “sage” benefactor, realizing the reference points to her Ancestor.
- Emilia and Angelina prove capable and responsible by observing the cultists, helping fight the Infinite Snake, and sending for Shade before the situation worsened. Angelina remains especially close to Shade during the confrontation.
- The High-Ring Cultist emerges as a sincere but fanatical believer in the ideology of war. He is willing to sacrifice himself but negotiates to protect his companions. Unlike his associates, he believes tyranny and war are necessary tools for civilization’s advancement.
- The two Mid-Ring cultists appear less ideologically committed, looking to their leader during the interrogation.
Significant Themes
- War as a destructive ideology: The cultist rationalizes war and tyranny as necessary forces for progress, illustrating how fanaticism can transform violence into a supposedly moral cause.
- The pursuit of forbidden power: Multiple factions are searching for the Falling Star, suggesting that the Meteor and the War Beast may determine the future balance of the world.
- Secrets and manipulation: Knowledge is treated as currency. Shade exchanges survival for information, while the cultists carefully limit what they reveal.
- Hidden alliances and interconnected conspiracies: The revelation that the Tyranny Club received information from a Green Lake “sage” links the current crisis to earlier events and to the wider network of the Seer Association and Audrey’s Ancestor.
- War as an engineered event: The cult’s plan to exploit the Falling Star and provoke conflict demonstrates that the coming war is not merely political; powerful groups are actively seeking to create or intensify it.
Character Interactions
- Shade challenges the cultists for abandoning their injured companions, establishing his moral authority and control over the encounter.
- Emilia and Angelina brief Shade on the events at the Ice Lake, confirming their trust and cooperation with him.
- Audrey supports Shade both practically and strategically, healing the injured and reinforcing his interrogation through threats.
- Shade and the cult leader negotiate a structured exchange: three questions for the lives of the prisoners.
- Their ideological exchange over the value of war highlights the contrast between Shade’s pragmatic skepticism and the cultist’s sincere fanaticism.
- Audrey’s connection to the Green Lake “sage” adds personal weight to the revelation that her Ancestor’s activities helped spread knowledge of the Falling Star.
