Background / History

Family and early trauma

Xie Mingli is the daughter of Marquis Wu, Xie Chengjun, and the younger sister of Xie Jinghong. Her rare Cold Soul Meridian made her the target of a proposed marriage alliance with Prince Yan's Estate, which intended to exploit her as a soul-forging cauldron; Xie Chengjun discovered the scheme and broke off the engagement. 37 174

As a child, she was forced to witness her mother's execution during a Soul Offering Ceremony. The Emperor subsequently branded the Xie family as rebellious blood and ordered Xie Mingli imprisoned in the Mirror Prison for thirty-nine layers of soul torture. 181

Qingzhou and the Azure Cloud Arena

Xie Mingli first meets Chu Ning after bandits and Heavenly Thunder Sect members attack her caravan. Stricken with Yin Sha Thunder Poison, she accepts his escort to Qingzhou; he later forcibly expels the poison with his Thunderous Force. 33 35

After returning to Marquis Wu's Estate, she declares Chu Ning her honored guest despite the servants' contempt and arranges lodgings for him ahead of the Azure Cloud Arena. She reveals that Xie Jinghong vanished five years earlier while searching the northern border for the Northern Border Military Manual. 36 37 38

During the arena conflict, Xie Jinghong reappears as an Ice Blood Puppet refined through soul-altering techniques. Overcome by grief after his puppet body is destroyed, Xie Mingli nevertheless orders an investigation and arrest of the Wang Family. 82 83

Defiance of Prince Duan

Xie Mingli repeatedly opposes Prince Duan's attempts to control her family and exploit Feng Jin through Xie Jinghong's condition. When Prince Duan assaults and humiliates her, she draws her ice blade against him; after Chu Ning arrives, she openly supports him against the prince's accusations. 88 89 90

When Chu Ning is trapped and injured, she breaks through to Eighth Rank Intermediate and attacks Prince Duan's guards with Cold Heart Reflecting Moon, declaring that she will kill him if he harms Chu Ning. 109

During the Devourer of Abyss's assault on Qingzhou, she regains her strength by consuming Hundred-Year Cold Marrow and awakens the Xie family's Cold Lotus True Vein. She fights alongside her father until he sends her into the army formation to recover. 114 115

Separation, imprisonment, and liberation

When Chu Ning leaves for the Northern Territory, Xie Mingli promises to wait for him and threatens to seek him out beneath the northern snow if he fails to return. 125

In the following years, she works through the capital's influential families to seek help for her father after he is accused of treason. She is eventually confined in the Mirror Prison and refuses the Emperor's attempt to place a Master's Mark on her soul, igniting her own Soul Fire in resistance. 173 177

Chu Ning breaks into the imperial capital and destroys the Mirror Prison to save her. After seeing the sacrifice he made to reach her, Xie Mingli chooses to walk the same path as him. 178 179

Fall of the old dynasty

Xie Mingli joins Chu Ning in confronting the Emperor and the Imperial Soul Diagram. She kills the Emperor with Cold Star Sever, avenging her mother and helping end the old dynasty's soul-based oppression. 181

Following the victory, she and Chu Ning establish the Thirty-Six Articles on Soul Consciousness Equal Rights, the Law by Election Legislative Draft, the Martial Artist Privilege Abolition Order, and the Soul Prison Sealing Order. 181

Regency and motherhood

While Chu Ning is away handling the First Grade Pavilion and the World Lock, Xie Mingli serves as Regent. Though heavily pregnant, she manages state memorials, military deployments, and pressure from hostile court factions. 216

She gives birth to their son, Ning Zhaoming, who possesses an innate Soul Body and Five-Pattern Fetal Mark. The court secretly grants him the title “Ning Clan's Great Soul.” 217

Appearance

Xie Mingli is commonly associated with austere white clothing and an ice-cold, noble bearing. Her appearance is refined and elegant, but her gaze is consistently described as sharp rather than soft. 45 81

Personality

Initially, Xie Mingli is composed, proud, and shaped by the worldview of Marquis Wu's Estate. She argues that people must bear responsibility for their own circumstances, putting her in sharp conflict with Chu Ning's compassion for the oppressed. 35 36

She is politically perceptive and cautious with trust. Although she initially assesses Chu Ning as a useful but uncertain ally, she recognizes his ability, protects his standing within her estate, and gradually relies on him. 35 36 45

Xie Mingli's restraint does not equal submission. She remains calm when confronting Feng Li, Wang Chongshan, Prince Duan, the Emperor, and the Mirror Prison's soul seals; when threatened, her defiance becomes direct and uncompromising. 38 84 88 177
