Joey was a very ordinary high school student, no different from the vast majority of high school students in the Federation.
His family environment was fairly good. His father ran a delicatessen, and supposedly the recipes had been passed down through their ancestors for many generations. The shop was even somewhat famous locally.
Although his family could not yet be considered a Middle Class family, they were already much better off than most.
Originally, following the course of this world's history, he would have gone to work at the delicatessen after graduation and inherited the "family business." The Great Depression had hurt their business as well, leaving little hope of expansion. They could only maintain their current operations.
He had also sent applications to several universities, but unfortunately, not a single one was willing to give him an interview.

Some universities thought his academic performance was not good enough and rejected him.
