Instead, he became very calm, like an unlucky man pinned down by fate and awaiting violation.

Every time he resisted, he was punched in the face! Now he had suddenly given up struggling, and had consequently become calm instead.
Perhaps this was reality, the future, the present, and history! When the final simulation ended, the Iron Bucket Defense Line was still torn apart, unable to hold back. Large numbers of small models representing enemy forces swiftly pierced through the defensive line, tearing Amelia's last remaining resistance to pieces.
Just as they had torn apart the defensive line!

The Prime Minister turned to Mr. Truman. "Do you have a cigarette? I came in too much of a hurry and didn't bring any."
Mr. Truman gave a few instructions to the people beside him, then took out his own cigarette case and handed one over. He lit one for himself as well.
He hadn't brought cigarettes, so he certainly hadn't brought a lighter either—unless he had done it deliberately! All right, that was just a small joke. The Prime Minister had forgotten his lighter too.
The two men leaned their heads together. Mr. Truman lit the Prime Minister's cigarette, then lit his own.
They each took a few puffs and began considering what to do next, how to do it, and whether it could be done.
