Meanwhile, Raven and Zatanna had arrived at the hospital. A patient had just died, and the two women cast their magic, branding a magical marker onto his soul.
Then the soul drifted blankly out of the window. A vortex appeared in the sky, visible only to the dead and certain mages, and sucked the soul upward.
"Is that a Soul Channel?"
Raven was taken aback. When a living being died, a Soul Channel did indeed carry its soul away, but that caused only a faint spatial fluctuation, flashing like a ripple as it carried the soul into Heaven or Hell.
Raven had never seen a vortex like this before. Something really was wrong in Boston.
"Raven, should we follow it inside?"
Zatanna looked at the vortex overhead and asked Raven, who shook her head. "Not yet. Whoever created that vortex must be at demon king level. If we rush in blindly, we could easily get trapped.
"Let's observe what's inside through that soul first."
"All right."
Zatanna and Raven cast their spells simultaneously, transferring their awareness into the soul.
The soul had already flown into the great vortex. Plenty of other souls surrounded him, all flying toward the opening ahead.
Beyond the opening, they could faintly make out an enormous building, though they couldn't see it clearly.
Soon, the soul entered the opening with the others. Just then, a pulse swept over him, erasing every spell Zatanna and Raven had placed on him. Both women let out muffled grunts.
That wasn't the end of it. Next, a group of grotesque monsters dropped out of the vortex, landing in front of Zatanna and Raven with a series of thuds.
