Background

Xi Shenlian was abandoned near a temple west of an orphanage and named by the orphanage director, who found him “like a delicate jade carving.” His name was chosen for its association with the western temple and his pitiful circumstances. 2

During childhood, he experienced hallucinations, heard nonexistent sounds, and occasionally spoke in phrases others could not understand. These episodes caused others to regard him as mentally unstable; he developed an inferiority complex and refused adoption. 2

He was one of the few children treated kindly by Takeoka Seiichiro, whom he later visited at his grave. Xi Shenlian promised to look after Takeoka’s family in some fashion, reflecting the loyalty he reserves for the very small number of people he considers his own. 34 35

At eighteen, Xi Shenlian awakened as an Awakened and received the Life Winner System—Luxury Supreme Custom Edition. His awakening cured the mental issues he associated with his childhood and initiated rapid physical evolution. 4 20 35
