Background / History
Caroline's father served as a courtier under Charles XV but was framed during a royal-succession crisis. Her mother was absent from her life while she was young. Archmage Kano discovered Caroline's magical talent, brought her into the Tower of Stars, and thereby offered her protection. 517
She later broke off an engagement with her family, left the Holy Kingdom and Kano's side, and remained away until Rorschach appeared. 211 Although trained at the Tower of Stars, she preferred teaching at the Imperial Royal Magic Academy to remaining among the Thirteen Magic Towers. 32
At the Academy, Caroline taught Space, Time, and Astronomy and became Rorschach's mentor. She recognized his unusual aptitude after he reconstructed Water Creation through principles adapted from Fireball, rather than using the standard summoning-based spell. 3 6
Appearance
Caroline was initially described as a brown-haired young woman, with a braid draped over her right chest. During her Academy days, she wore a white shirt and high-waisted green skirt beneath her mage robe. 6
- Brown hair; later wore it in a high ponytail while living in the Shadowlands. 6 303
- Favored a mage robe in professional settings. 6
- In later life, her hair became completely white, and she appeared ancient and weary. 671
Personality
Caroline is principled, protective, and deeply committed to education. She worries that young spellcasters may become servants of power, and she values Rorschach's sensitivity, diligence, and concern for his family. 6
She opposes reducing magical education to military production. When the Imperial Royal Magic Academy demanded security screening because of her Valois background and Kano's influence, she resigned rather than submit to an institution she believed was mass-producing “war tools.” 402
Her ethics do not prevent her from acting decisively under pressure. She pursued evidence of the Mother Earth Cult's dealings with Istarani's Knight Orders, detained Benedict and his companions after uncovering their deception, and repeatedly defended allies through dangerous spatial magic. 303 311 327
Caroline is also open-handed with knowledge. She willingly uploaded her spells to the Spellcasting Cloud despite knowing that they would become public and that Rorschach, as system operator, would gain access to their underlying principles. 411
Abilities & Skills
Spatial, Temporal, and Astral Magic
Caroline is a specialist trained through the Tower of Stars' disciplines of space, time, and celestial phenomena. She can detect the spatial fluctuations caused by standard Water Creation, which led her to realize that Rorschach's assessment spell had been constructed by another method. 6
- Creates short-range teleportation chains capable of transporting multiple people during combat. 313
- Opens and enlarges spatial rifts for travel between the Shadowlands and the material world. 321 333
- Designed the solidified Teleportation Array network that turned Rorschach's scattered facilities into a distributed Mage Tower. 409
- Developed a method for spiritual bodies to enter the Boundary Land using stellar-coordinate targeting. 411
- Her teleportation can be blocked in artificially isolated regions lacking usable external coordinates. 313
Defensive and Control Magic
Caroline combines spatial techniques with barriers and battlefield control.
- Cast emerald Aether daggers that can explode if evaded. 311
- Maintains force fields and defensive spells against the Marquis's advancing shadows. 312
- Cast a spatial stasis wave that limits high-speed movement, slowing the Marquis's clones and Shadow Guards. 327
- Stabilizes unstable space to prevent uncontrolled crossings into the material world. 322
- Uploaded Seal Door Technique, Gazing Curtain, and Dimensional Anchor to the Spellcasting Cloud. 412
Magical Research and Engineering
Caroline applies spatial theory to practical magical infrastructure and research.
- Helped Rorschach materialize a Tower Spirit's new calculation-core shell within the Void Realm by using detailed blueprints as a symbolic template. 410
- Collaborated on the Air Creation Technique, a spell intended to extract light gases from the upper Air Element Plane. 446 451
- Co-authored Rorschach's research article on anti-magic effects, contributing the spacetime probability analysis behind the work. 528
- Designed a safety measure for interplanar exploration: paired summoning scrolls that could reverse-locate and return her and Rorschach if activated. 441
Equipment / Items
- Mage staff — Used for barrier and field magic, including the protective barrier around the wounded Mage Mariano. 188
- Glass Heart pendant — A vivid, unpolished glass pendant used for limited divination and communication with Rorschach near a Sixteenth Year node. 678
- Teleportation Array designs — Her distributed Mage Tower design used costly Orichalcum-based gates and a dedicated Transmutation Dust converter. 409
Relationships
- Rorschach — Former student, fellow mage, and long-term research partner. Caroline mentors him, challenges his ethics, assists his spatial projects, and remains concerned whenever he disappears or risks himself recklessly. 6 409 424 551
- Archmage Kano — Former teacher and protector who brought her to the Tower of Stars after her family tragedy; Caroline later returns to assist his Astral Plane project. 6 517 453
- Benedict — Initially an ally and local source of information in the Shadowlands, but Caroline turns against him after learning that his resistance had accepted aid from the Mother Earth Cult. 311
- The Marquis of Istarani — Caroline served as his magic consultant while hiding in the Shadowlands, though their relationship was strained by the Marquis's control of the domain and his hostility toward intruders. 303 304
- Andre — Rorschach's disciple and Caroline's colleague at the Mage Tower; he initially mistakes her for an intern before learning she is Rorschach's senior under Kano. 409
- Richard — One of Caroline's students; she later works with him during the Alliance operation that rescues Alec from imperial loyalists. 513 676
Story Role / Major Arcs
Istarani Investigation and Shadowlands
While traveling to Istarani to observe a comet cluster, Caroline accidentally witnessed a transaction between representatives of the Mother Earth Cult and one of the Twelve Knight Orders. When she tried to leave and report what she had seen, local authorities obstructed her, her residence was searched, and her identity was erased from official records through magic. 79 303 304 274
She took refuge in the Shadowlands, where she occupied a supposedly haunted house protected by an old magic circle and acted as the Marquis's consultant. Rorschach eventually finds her after entering Shadow City to investigate her disappearance. 303
Breaking the Shadowlands Seals
Caroline joins Rorschach and Benedict in navigating the Deep Dive Zone, surviving its hazards through repeated teleportation and spatial manipulation. 313
She becomes increasingly suspicious when Rorschach's behavior changes after his encounter with the Wise Man's Phantom and the Elf Elder's memories. She uses Telepathy Spell to test whether he still remembers their shared past. 318
During the battle against the Marquis, Caroline's speed-limiting spatial stasis spell protects Grey Elves, Rat Speakers, and allied fighters from the Marquis's fast-moving clones. 327 She later shields Rorschach during his unstable fusion with his red-robed counterpart and helps evacuate Storm City through a long-distance teleportation rift. 329 333
Mage Tower and Spellcasting Cloud
After leaving the Academy, Caroline accepts Rorschach's invitation to collaborate at his facilities. Discovering that he lacks a proper Mage Tower, she stays to design and construct one through a network of linked Teleportation Arrays. 401 409
She helps Rorschach explore the Void Realm, create a new vessel for the Tower Spirit, enter the Boundary Land spiritually, and establish the early Spellcasting Cloud system. 410 411
Caroline becomes the second documented spell uploader. Her uploaded spells grow new branches on the Law Tree, and she supports making magical knowledge more accessible while warning Rorschach to keep the Boundary Land secret from powerful outsiders. 412
Later Teaching and Leadership
Caroline returns to teaching after the integration of the Spellcasting Cloud, announcing new ways for apprentices to earn advancement points through spell-chain design, Tower Spirit-recognized optimization, and substitute teaching. 476
At the Tower of Arcane Arts, Rorschach publicly credits her with having “successfully taught one Archmage,” changing students' initially dismissive attitude toward her. 513
By the Sixteenth Year Assembly, Caroline serves as chief of the Tower of Myriad Arts and acts as a key authority among the magical world's leaders. 678
Endpoint Star
At the final gathering on Endpoint Star, Caroline is the first guest to enter Rorschach's newly formed tower. Inside, Rorschach tells her that it is “the end”; she loses consciousness, and her immediate fate is not disclosed in the supplied account. 689
Notable Quotes
“Many spellcasters, many apprentices I've taught... they become too engrossed in their own power and the status magic brings.” 6
“Now, you are mass-producing war tools, sending those amateur mages to the front lines to kill or be killed.” 402
“You're my student, of course that's fine! As for the first point, as long as it's not used for evil, there's no harm in letting more people learn it.” 411
Trivia
- Caroline initially suspected that Rorschach had cheated during his mage assessment because his Water Creation produced no detectable spatial fluctuation. 6
- Her fear of gigantic structures becomes apparent in the Deep Dive Zone, where the scale of ancient Elven statues visibly unsettles her. 313
- Rorschach's formal introduction of Caroline as an educator later credits her with teaching an Archmage—himself. 513
