Yu Xiaogang was stationed at Nuoding Academy as a renowned—if highly self-regarding—theoretical Master. On Tang San’s first day at the academy, he deduced that Tang San possessed a second Martial Soul and accepted him as his sole closed-door disciple. He intended to use Tang San’s talent to validate his theories and restore his own reputation. 10

His interest in Xiao Tian began after hearing that Xiao Tian’s Sword Fifteen possessed intelligence. Yu Xiaogang considered Xiao Tian only suitable for nominal “registered disciple” status because of his rank-five innate Soul Power, but wanted access to the intelligent Martial Soul for research. Xiao Tian rejected the offer outright, establishing an antagonistic relationship between them. 9 10

After Xiao Tian’s rapid rise and two Thousand-Year Soul Rings, Yu Xiaogang was forced to reconsider the importance of physical constitution in Soul Ring absorption. He publicly acknowledged that his established framework had not accounted for such an exception, partly to explain why Tang San had not been pushed toward similarly dangerous rings. 24 25

Yu Xiaogang places enormous value on his status as a theory Master and is highly sensitive to public humiliation. He presents accepting a disciple as a privilege, is easily swayed by flattery regarding his reputation, and initially treats Xiao Tian more as a research subject than a student. 9 17

He is nevertheless deeply invested in Tang San’s long-term development. He repeatedly discourages Tang San from rushing the Clear Sky Hammer’s cultivation or abandoning foundational Soul Power training merely to imitate Xiao Tian’s self-created skills. 50 169 186
