Background / History

Song Xue grew up at the Spirit Serpent Martial Hall after her father, Song Qinghong, settled in Mount Wei City with help from Qi Yu’s father, Qi Changshun. Their fathers became sworn brothers and arranged Song Xue’s childhood engagement to Qi Yu. As children, Song Xue and Qi Yu initially regarded the engagement as a promise to be close friends: he brought her food, while she promised to protect him from bullies. 1 12

Qi Yu eventually abandoned the martial hall for gambling dens, brothels, and the Umbrella Sect follower he pursued. Song Xue’s attempts to find him ended with her witnessing his dissolute behavior; during one fight, he even used her to cover his retreat. This left her deeply distrustful when he suddenly returned to train at the hall. 1

Song Qinghong worried that the hall lacked a successor capable of reaching the Seventh Rank Penetrating Force realm. Though he recognized Song Xue’s talent, he did not want her burdened by a lifetime of fighting. He viewed her marriage into the powerful Qi Family as possible protection for both his daughter and the martial hall. 3
