"Ah! Finally back."
Fang Xiu stood at his own doorstep, looking at the familiar stairwell and security door. The string in his heart that had been taut all this time finally slackened. In that instant, he even felt that the air at home was freer and fresher than outside.
But the moment Fang Xiu opened the door, he saw a gun pointed at him. A female police officer with a hint of uniformed allure shouted sternly, "Don't move."
"???"
Fang Xiu immediately raised both hands. He had dared to act arrogant and overbearing before those monsters, fearless no matter what came at him, but deep down, Fang Xiu was still a law-abiding citizen who had received years of compulsory education. Compared to those monsters, this police officer was actually more intimidating to him.
Fang Xiu glanced into the room and saw two more officers inside, guns raised and aimed at him. They had been searching and inspecting his home, never expecting Fang Xiu, whom they believed to be dead, to return.
"Officer? I'm a law-abiding citizen." Fang Xiu wore a frightened expression, but his mind was running through whether there was anything suspicious on him. On his way back, he had hidden everything else away. He had even dumped his electric bike beyond the outskirts and walked home. There was nothing to fear now.
"You're Fang Xiu? You're still alive?" The female officer seemed extremely surprised, and she recognized Fang Xiu at a glance.
"Ah? Yeah, I'm alive." With both hands raised, Fang Xiu truly did not know how to answer that question.
After saying it, the female officer also seemed to realize she had spoken nonsense. A living person was standing right in front of her.
She lowered her pistol. The other two cautiously approached as well, surrounding Fang Xiu. She took out her ID. "I'm from the Criminal Investigation Brigade. We need you to cooperate with us and explain exactly what you did these past two days."
Fang Xiu looked at the photo and name on the ID and roughly understood why they had come to his home. They had probably assumed he had died in that hotel. He nodded. "All right, Officer Lin Shu. Ask whatever you want. Should we talk on the sofa, or are you taking me back with you?"
Lin Shu shook her head. "Not for now. Let's begin like this."
She took out a notebook and began recording. The young male officer beside her held up his phone and filmed Fang Xiu. "Based on what we know, yesterday morning, you reported that a middle-aged man wearing a hood and carrying an axe was prowling outside your door. You suspected he had ill intentions, so you called the police. Is that correct?"
Fang Xiu nodded. "That's right. And your police officers didn't believe me. You said I was making it up and made me write a thousand-word self-criticism."
Lin Shu looked somewhat embarrassed, then asked, "But you didn't go home. Instead, you rented a room at Happiness Apartment in East Gate District. Why?"
Fang Xiu became irritated at that. "Why? When a citizen was in danger, you didn't protect me. I didn't dare go home, so what else was I supposed to do?"
Yet Fang Xiu was a little nervous at this moment. In that room, there had been the Deep One Killer's phone and a sniper rifle. If Red Devil and Clown, who had wanted to kill him, had not taken them away, he would be in serious trouble.
However, she did not ask about that. What she asked was, "Did you know Happiness Apartment caught fire? How did you survive?"
A trace of terror appeared on Fang Xiu's face as he said, "I suddenly woke up that night and went out for a late-night snack. I hadn't gone far when I heard an explosion behind me. I was terrified, so I hid. I only dared come out after dawn. Then I wanted to come back and pick up some things, but I ran into you instead."
The female officer asked Fang Xiu many detailed questions. Most of what Fang Xiu said was true; he merely omitted certain things that had happened in between.
"Why do you think those killers targeted you?" the female officer asked Fang Xiu in confusion.
"I don't know that either. But if anyone saw some weirdo wearing a hood and carrying an axe standing outside their door, wouldn't they be scared? I don't know what they wanted to do—rob me or kill me. Maybe they were just perverts." Fang Xiu looked utterly bewildered.
At that moment, Lin Shu suddenly studied Fang Xiu's face carefully. Being stared at like that by a Beauty who was also a police officer made Fang Xiu particularly uncomfortable.
Officer Lin Shu took out her phone and opened a video. In it, a person radiating white light leaped dozens of meters in a single bound. With one stomp, white light surged wildly as they crushed a huge pit into the ground.
"Do you know this person?" Lin Shu carefully observed Fang Xiu's eyes.
"Ah?" Fang Xiu looked as though he did not understand what Lin Shu was asking.
"You mean the person in there? Is this from some movie? The special effects are so heavy you can't even see their shadow. How could I recognize them?" Fang Xiu shook his head in confusion.
Officer Lin Shu kept watching Fang Xiu's eyes. After a long while, she stood and shook his hand. "All right. Thank you for your cooperation. If there are any issues, we'll call you."
Fang Xiu immediately said, "When I fled in a panic, I dropped my phone. I haven't replaced it yet."
Lin Shu glanced at Fang Xiu and wrote a number on the paper. "This is the number for our bureau. If there's any problem, you can call this number to find us."
Eh? Fang Xiu had thought she was going to give him her own number. He took it, examined it seriously, and nodded. "All right. If there are any problems, I'll contact you."
After seeing the three officers out, Fang Xiu turned around and saw that his home had been turned upside down. Even his computer had been opened. But they definitely would not find anything, because before yesterday, Fang Xiu had been nothing more than an ordinary office worker, with nothing unusual about him.
Fang Xiu threw himself onto the sofa and lay down, closing his eyes. He was so exhausted that his eyelids felt like they were fighting each other.
"Looks like they didn't find anything in that hotel room. Red Devil and Clown must have taken those things away. They've probably all been destroyed beneath the ruins of that unfinished building now."
After leaving the apartment, Officer Lin Shu glanced back at Fang Xiu's room. A colleague beside her asked, "So? Is there something wrong with him?"
"Judging from his file and past records, there's nothing suspicious. He's just an ordinary person. It's impossible for him to be connected to those three killers who drifted in from abroad," Lin Shu said after thinking it over.
The middle-aged male officer nodded. "That's true. He looks like an ordinary person and doesn't seem to have undergone any training. But I find it strange. Why would those three killers target him?"
Lin Shu shook her head in confusion. "I don't know. But those three killers have already murdered dozens of people. This Fang Xiu was only one insignificant target among those they had their eyes on. He was simply lucky enough to survive. And this matter is too strange. Did you see that video? There are only two people in it. The other person isn't in any of our files. The three of them don't look human at all. Our people went to examine the scene too, and the report they sent back said that level of destruction was simply not something humans could cause."
"Could it really be some kind of supernatural incident? It was probably just caused by the angle of the light when the video was filmed. The so-called explosion and deep pit were nothing more than bombs," the middle-aged officer said with a laugh. Having experienced countless strange and bizarre cases, he would never believe in so-called supernatural events.
"Who knows? We'll only understand after we investigate it thoroughly." Lin Shu handled things with meticulous precision, appearing steadier than the two male officers.
The young officer behind them said, "It's spreading like wildfire online now. That video is everywhere, and people are even livestreaming the collapsed building and the deep pit."
The middle-aged officer said, "Every year, some strange things happen. Usually, they blow over after a while."
