"Hm?"
"What was that?"
Lu Siye crouched down, picked up the silvery-white object, and examined it in his palm.
It seemed to be made of silver. Its shape looked a little like a lock, and the words "long life" were inscribed on it. It was probably one half of a Longevity Lock.
He tucked it into his pocket and went over to the Blazing Blood Blade. There, he found another silvery-white object.
He picked it up. It looked very much like the first one, but had the words "a hundred years" inscribed on it.
He tucked that one into his pocket, too, then pulled the Blazing Blood Blade out of the ground and crouched beside Zhuang Xiaoman.
"Are you all right?" Lu Siye asked with concern.
Zhuang Xiaoman seemed to hear someone speaking beside her. She slowly raised her head and stared at Lu Siye with a dazed expression.
Zhuang Xiaoman no longer looked as delicate as she had that morning. Her hair was disheveled, with strands stuck to her face by sweat. Her makeup had run from her tears, and she looked utterly lost.
Lu Siye checked her with his Yang energy. Her three Yang Fires were still burning, so her three souls should be unharmed. However, quite a bit of Yin energy remained in her body.
He sighed quietly, took Zhuang Xiaoman's hand, and drew the Yin energy out of her. At the same time, he circulated his cultivation technique and transferred some Yang energy to her.
Only after he had done this did the dazed look in Zhuang Xiaoman's eyes slowly begin to fade. She looked at Lu Siye beside her, then suddenly wrapped both arms around his like a koala and burst into tears.
Lu Siye, who had been single in both his lives, was at a loss. He had no idea how to handle the situation, so he could only let her cry.
After a while, her sobs grew quieter, and Zhuang Xiaoman's breathing became even.
She seemed to have fallen asleep.
After being frightened repeatedly in such a short time, she was already completely exhausted.
He gently slipped his arm out of Zhuang Xiaoman's embrace, supported her back, and leaned her against the wall.
Once he was sure she wouldn't fall over, Lu Siye stood up and walked beneath a streetlamp. He took the two pieces of the Longevity Lock from his pocket and compared them. Their broken edges fit together perfectly. When he joined the two halves, they were indeed the same Longevity Lock.
Strange!
The system had clearly said Twin Ghost Infants. Why was there only one Longevity Lock?
Could they not be siblings, but two personalities in the same person?
Lu Siye furrowed his brow, puzzled.
A fallen leaf drifted past his eyes. Suddenly, the Longevity Lock in his hand flashed with a burst of white light, dazzling him.
He shut his eyes instinctively. When he opened them again, the surroundings had completely changed.
The scene before him was blurry, as if a thick fog had rolled in or a pane of frosted glass stood in front of him. He couldn't see the world clearly, and it felt a little like a dream.
Lu Siye looked around. He could just make out an old-fashioned house. In its center, an old-fashioned light bulb was the only source of light.
He extended his senses to their limit. After confirming that there was no danger nearby, Lu Siye thought for a moment, then slowly started walking forward.
When he reached the middle of the house, the scene before him changed again.
A crude wooden bed stood in front of him. A woman whose face he couldn't make out lay on it, while a man stood beside her.
Next to the bed was a small cradle. A round-faced baby slept inside, a silvery-white Longevity Lock hanging around its neck.
Strangely, everything here was blurry except for the baby and the Longevity Lock, which were perfectly clear.
What's more, the Longevity Lock around the baby's neck looked exactly like the one in his hand. They might even be the same one.
Just as Lu Siye was about to move closer for a better look, the scene changed again.
A person shrouded in black mist stood inside the house. The man who had been beside the bed spread his arms and blocked the newcomer's path.
Lu Siye couldn't see the man's expression. He could only watch his mouth opening and closing, as if he were speaking angrily.
Suddenly, a blood-red blade flash burst from the black mist. The man, the woman, the baby, the Longevity Lock—everything before Lu Siye was cleaved in two.
Before he could react, the scene changed once more.
The person in the black mist went over to the baby lying on the ground. Two white phantoms floated above it.
"Hahaha..."
A chilling laugh suddenly rang out in the previously silent room.
Two streams of black energy floated out of the mist, each carrying one of the white phantoms. They entered opposite sides of the baby's body, and the two broken halves of the Longevity Lock merged with them as well.
The scene shifted again. Two tiny babies stood beside the black mist, wobbling as they followed the person inside it away.
The vision ended there. The surroundings began to crumble, and darkness swallowed everything as a feeling of weightlessness washed over him.
When Lu Siye opened his eyes again, the familiar street had returned. He watched a fallen leaf drift past.
Had only an instant passed?
What exactly had that scene been?
The baby cleaved in two... the two white phantoms... the two babies walking away...
Wait. Could Twin Ghost Infants mean two souls in one body?
If so, had he just witnessed the birth of the Twin Ghost Infants?!
"Could the master the ghost infant mentioned before it died be that person hidden in the black mist?" Lu Siye's face darkened, and an inexplicable fury burned within him.
That bastard had actually killed a living person to create a ghost!
Lu Siye took a deep breath and forced down his anger. He took a photo of the Longevity Lock, typed up a message, and reported the matter to the Town Demon Suppression Division.
The progress bar spun for a while, then the report failed!
What was going on? Was there still no signal?
Lu Siye suddenly realized something. He looked around. The surroundings were utterly silent; he couldn't even hear the cicadas that were so common in summer. The street was eerily quiet.
Something was wrong. Why was the Ghost Wall still in place after the Twin Ghost Infants had died?
Lu Siye quietly circulated his cultivation technique and watched his surroundings warily.
There was only one likely explanation: the Ghost Wall hadn't been created by the Twin Ghost Infants. Another ghost had made it.
For a ghost to keep a Ghost Wall in place, it had to be within its boundaries.
In other words, another ghost of unknown strength was hiding somewhere nearby.
Whoosh—
Suddenly, a shadow flashed past in the distance and darted into an alley.
Lu Siye turned to look. His face dark, he stayed where he was, making no move to investigate.
He waited a long time, but the shadow didn't appear again. Lu Siye didn't move either.
Just as he was considering what to do, a furious roar came from behind him.
"You're the one who killed my Twin Ghost Infants!"
Bad!
The sound of something cutting through the air rang out behind him. Lu Siye tensed, but he had no time to dodge. He could only barely swing his blade up to block.
Bang!
A tremendous force slammed into the blade, sending Lu Siye flying backward with it.
He quickly steadied himself in midair. When his feet hit the ground, he stumbled back more than ten steps before he finally absorbed the tremendous impact.
He hurriedly looked up toward where he had been standing. A person shrouded in black mist stood there.
"Bastard, it was you!" Lu Siye gritted his teeth, fury blazing in his eyes.
