Murphy was sent back from the ambush at Blackflame Pass to the Swamp Forbidden Zone by Triss's super-teleportation spell almost instantly. In a crisis, Triss was always frighteningly reliable.
She even fine-tuned the teleportation destination, carrying her little darling in a humiliating bridal carry and leaping through the gate into the Land of Creation. The three beetle assistants appeared at once.
After Assistant Number One scanned Murphy's vitals, it immediately let out a piercing alarm:
"Curator's vital signs are critically weak! Risk of death imminent! Swamp Exhibition Hall special incident protocol initiated. Entering Level One combat readiness!"
"Whirr, whirr, whirr!"
The modules in the unremarkable steel door flipped around, instantly deploying more than sixty-six heavy weapons of various types. Under the special incident protocol, they entered patrol mode.
Anyone who didn't belong here and came close now would be blown to smithereens on the spot. Even more impressive, the defensive matrix and kinetic neutralization field—mentioned only in the Curator's regulations—had also entered pre-activation.
The six energy towers surrounding the entire Swamp Forbidden Zone had been reactivated for the first time in over a thousand years.
Hidden beneath the swamp and among the rocks, they made the entire zone tremble as they powered up. A faint azure matrix grid appeared, its hexagonal energy framework covering the whole swamp in an egg-shaped shell.
Thirty-six concealed sentry turrets surrounding Zone A burst out of the harmless-looking muck, each equipped with a nine-round rocket pod and two rotating gun barrels. A hundred and twelve chemical deterrent devices shot up from underground like black spires, hovering five meters in the air.
The moment these two systems activated, they linked together to cover all of Zone A.
At a single command, a nonlethal chemical mist—though potent enough to paralyze an intruder instantly—would blanket the entire area.
