It was three hours later when the Witch Hunters entered the sewers. By then, the ghoul disaster had passed its initial period of chaotic defense and shifted into a counterattack. With Murphy joining the fight underground in person, the battle reached its fiercest stage of the night.

Thanks to the time the fearless little players had bought at the start, the emergency deployment of the Cardman People's Army had managed to establish several defensive lines before many ghouls could reach the surface.

However, some ghouls had stumbled upon the torn-open rock face in the city rift. They poured out through the near-vertical, cleanly sliced fissure, plunged into the deeper rift below, and were swallowed by the surging astral energy there.

What lay at the bottom of the city rift remained an "unsolved mystery."

The impact of more than a dozen dimensional meteorites had left the area saturated with dense, chaotic psionic energy. Even a psionic master like Triss could barely discern what lay below.

It wasn't that they couldn't get in. It was simply unnecessary.

Whatever was down there, it wouldn't affect surface construction anytime soon. Besides, the chaotic psionic energy was gradually dissipating. Murphy had plenty of patience to wait until whatever was hidden there came to light. More importantly, he simply didn't have the resources to invest in an expedition that might bring no reward at all.
