Background

Simon began as a farm boy and one of Derek’s earliest recruits. Derek personally gave him the name “Simon,” valuing his obedience, loyalty, and consistent training effort above superior natural talent. At the time, he was a heavily built Level 8 Spearman whose formation fighting was stronger than his already formidable individual spearwork. 7

Derek formally made Simon his Knight Squire before the Goat Merchant Guild escort mission. Simon, visibly nervous during the ceremony, swore to offer Derek his life and loyalty; the promotion represented a major social advancement for a commoner. 8

Service under Derek rapidly changed Simon’s circumstances. Within a year, he had gone from a farmer to a strong, equipped Knight Squire with a warhorse, reinforced armor, and a black longsword. He returned to Haystack Village to deliver wages, letters, gifts, and recruitment funds, impressing Sheriff Andrew with his transformation while discreetly withholding Derek’s business affairs. 17

Appearance

Simon’s appearance changes markedly with his rise from recruit to knight and commander.

  • Powerfully built even as a Level 8 Spearman. 7
  • Initially wore simple leather armor and carried a spear and shortsword. 7
  • Later appeared in leather armor reinforced with iron plates, carrying a black longsword and riding a true warhorse. 17
  • Wore half plate armor and fielded a warhorse protected by leather armor among Derek’s uniformly equipped squires. 22
  • His heavily damaged armor was later displayed as a symbol of his repeated charges through enemy formations. 185
  • As a Six-Winged Power Angel, his armament manifests black steel wings with six upright steel feathers. 954

Personality

Simon is defined by uncompromising loyalty to Derek. He sees Derek as the source of his changed fate and accepts himself as the Duke’s “claw and fang,” willing to serve whether Derek chooses to become a dragon or slay one. 17 395

He is aggressive and eager for battle, often favoring direct cavalry action over caution. However, he follows orders even when dissatisfied, such as when Derek refused to let him lead a potentially suicidal breakthrough charge or ordered him to halt after an artillery victory. 116 193

Despite his bluntness and contempt for ostentation, Simon is pragmatic. He initially disliked artillery and resented the burden placed on warhorses, but quickly recognized Rogers’s skill, integrated artillery into his operations, and later offered his own horses to move the guns. 190 191 193

His reputation is built equally on effectiveness and cruelty. Simon uses intimidation, deception, executions, and threats without hesitation when pursuing Derek’s objectives, leaving many noble officials afraid of him long after the wars that made his name. 397 587 589

Abilities & Skills

Knightly Combat

Simon is an elite mounted and dismounted combatant whose strength, speed, and aggression make him exceptionally dangerous in direct engagements.

  • Knocked three opposing knights from their mounts while carrying a banner and provoking Grand Duke Fernandez’s forces. 83
  • Killed four Southern Knights in successive duels, including three consecutive victories after the first kill. 156
  • Defeated General Logue in close quarters by seizing, twisting, and pinning his sword arm before having him bound. 232
  • Fought with a revolver and greatsword during the assault on the Royal Private Army’s camp. 190
  • His armor bears evidence of repeated heavy-armored charges through enemy formations. 185

Cavalry Warfare

Simon strongly identifies with cavalry and treats warhorses as companions rather than expendable equipment.

  • Led a cavalry banner in pursuit of the Holy Cross Kingdom’s retreating army. 53
  • Used small, mobile cavalry forces to evade a far larger encirclement for seven days, exhausting the enemy before heavy snow forced their withdrawal. 54
  • Led cavalry assaults during the attack on the Royal Private Army’s camp. 190 191
  • Resented forcing warhorses to drag artillery through mud, though he later supplied horses to assist the artillery unit. 190 193

Tactical Command

Simon combines aggressive instincts with battlefield awareness and deception.

  • Noticed inconsistencies in the Holy Cross Kingdom’s retreat, eventually realizing that its army had vanished into an ambush. 53 54
  • Feigned ignorance of the trap, drew enemy forces into a fruitless chase, and repeatedly slipped cavalry through their search net. 54
  • Exploited a gap in Duke Wilson’s Barbarian formation with one thousand men after Derek identified the opening. 117
  • Requested the Monastery Knight Order’s cooperation for a planned “thunderous strike” designed to crush an enemy force and withdraw under the appearance of a routine sortie. 227
  • Commanded the war to destroy the Griffin Kingdom, with the Ministers of Army and Navy placed under his authority for the campaign. 395

Artillery Coordination

Although initially skeptical of guns and artillery, Simon learned to employ them as part of combined-arms warfare.

  • Allowed Rogers to test artillery against the Royal Private Army’s wooden camp walls. 190
  • Ordered the assault after the opening bombardment and adapted to Rogers’s ceasefire order to avoid friendly fire. 191
  • Considered Rogers’s artillery and sniping proposal while assessing the Holy Cross defenses from a watchtower. 192
  • Used artillery to disrupt the Church Knight Order before engaging its cavalry. 204

Transcendent Power and Six-Winged Angel Armament

By the interstellar era, Simon had become a Six-Winged Power Angel capable of commanding high-level knight formations.

  • Took control of the Knight Order’s local network through the consciousness of his Six-Winged Angel Armament. 954
  • Led an arrow formation of Six-Winged Knights against a Native Civilization’s Fortress Cannon. 954
  • Used linked Transcendent Energy Shields to protect the charging formation from the Fortress Cannon’s attack. 954
  • Possesses sufficient personal strength to tear apart an Angel-class mecha with his bare hands even without armor. 954

Administration and Internal Security

Simon’s military career developed into major security and administrative responsibilities.

  • Controlled the Internal Guard for years and became familiar with its political connections and internal vulnerabilities. 394 395
  • Was entrusted with the Griffin Kingdom campaign partly because, as a commoner with few outside ties, Derek considered him his most reliable subordinate. 394
  • Governed the Lunar Spaceport, established its government and a fifty-man Space Guard, and personally led lunar survey operations. 767
  • Was tasked with restoring Sleepless Port after the Griffin campaign and ensuring it was not left in ruins. 396

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Spear and shortsword during his early service as a Spearman. 7
  • Longsword bestowed during his Knight Squire investiture. 8
  • Black longsword, reinforced leather armor, and a warhorse. 17
  • Half plate armor and an armored warhorse. 22
  • Heavy armor used during repeated battlefield charges. 185
  • Handmade limited-edition revolver with poor reliability. 190
  • Greatsword used in close-quarters fighting. 190
  • Monocular telescope used for battlefield observation. 192
  • Six-Winged Angel Armament and Transcendent Energy Shield equipment. 954

Story Role / Major Arcs

Rise under Derek

He becomes a visible example of Derek’s promise that common soldiers can gain wealth, status, and honor through training and service. 7 8

Birch Castle and the Holy Cross Retreat

Sent to shadow Earl Connor’s retreating army, Simon discovers an ambush and turns the enemy’s plan against them. His small cavalry force repeatedly evades the Holy Cross encirclement until the approaching snow makes the enemy’s withdrawal disastrous. His success brings public recognition despite his commoner origins. 53 54

Founding of the Northern Duchy

During the seizure of control that accompanied the Duchy’s founding, Simon leads Augusta-trained forces across the Northern Lands, requisitions trained soldiers, and brings strategically important areas under the new regime’s control. 218

Griffin Kingdom Campaign

Derek assigns Simon the war to destroy the Griffin Kingdom, expecting him to eliminate future threats rather than merely occupy territory. Simon uses fear and political manipulation against Griffin nobles, then oversees the campaign that ends the kingdom. 394 395 397
