When the appointed time arrived, Lin Xuan walked calmly onto the lecture platform in the center of the plaza, dressed in a simple azure researcher's robe. His gaze swept over the crowd below, whose expressions varied, and he began in a steady voice. Though not loud, it carried clearly to every disciple's ears:
"Fellow disciples, Xuanyuanzi is not here today to teach profound Daoist Magic or explain secret techniques. I only wish to discuss with you some seemingly ordinary questions that may nevertheless concern the very foundations of our cultivation." He paused, then posed a question. "We cultivate by breathing in spiritual energy, tempering our Divine Sense, and comprehending the Heavenly Dao. So tell me, what exactly is this spiritual energy of Heaven and Earth? And how can our Divine Sense perceive it and draw it in?"
The disciples below fell silent for a moment, then one ventured an answer: "Spiritual energy is the essence of Heaven and Earth, formless and intangible, filling the void." "Divine Sense is the power of the soul, mysterious beyond measure, able to perceive all things."
Lin Xuan nodded. "Well answered. But how can something 'formless and intangible' fill the void? And how does something 'mysterious beyond measure' work?" Seeing everyone deep in thought, he changed tack. "Today, I'll try to use a new 'language'—a way of looking at 'microscopic change'—to glimpse a small part of the answer."
He did not begin by introducing the unfamiliar word "quantum." Instead, he started with the most intuitive phenomenon: "Have you ever seen water wear through stone? A tiny drop, over many years, can pierce solid rock. That is microscopic force acting continuously, giving rise to macroscopic change. Cultivation is the same. Each breath and each thought is a microscopic act; accumulated over time, they form the foundation of the Great Dao."
Next, he introduced the central concept: "In my homeland, certain sages proposed a hypothesis. They believed that the smallest building blocks of all things in this world were not fixed and unchanging, like grains of sand. Before they are 'observed,' their state is uncertain, like a blurry 'wave' containing countless possibilities. Only when they are 'observed' or interact with other things do they 'choose' a definite state and reveal themselves, as if a 'wave' had condensed into a 'particle.' This phenomenon may provisionally be called 'Wave-Particle Duality' and the 'Observer Effect.'"
The crowd began to stir, and whispers broke out. The idea was far too strange! How could something be both wave-like and particle-like? How could its state change because it was observed?
Lin Xuan remained unruffled and connected the theory to the phenomena of cultivation: "From this perspective, the spiritual energy of Heaven and Earth might be seen as an ocean of energy in a 'wave' state, brimming with possibilities. The 'Divine Sense' of us cultivators, in turn, might be viewed as a special kind of 'observation' force. When we calm our minds and use Divine Sense to 'perceive' and 'guide' spiritual energy, we are making an 'observation,' causing this 'wave' of spiritual energy to 'collapse' into 'particle'-state energy that we can absorb and use, in the place and direction we need it! This may be part of the essence of 'Drawing Qi into the Body'!"
The entire crowd was stunned! Even Daoist Duobao, seated at the front, opened his eyes, a thoughtful look on his face. Explaining the unfathomably mysterious process of drawing in Qi through "wave-particle transformation" and "observation-induced collapse" was unprecedented, yet the argument possessed a strange, compelling elegance!
"Consider the casting of spells," Lin Xuan continued, pressing his advantage. "A fireball spell doesn't conjure fire from nothing. Instead, we use Divine Sense as a guide and spiritual power as a medium to intensely 'observe' and 'set' the microscopic energy in a particular region, causing it to 'choose' a 'particle' state that burns fiercely and releases light and heat! Evasion techniques likewise involve temporarily 'setting' the state of our own energy and that of the surrounding space, allowing us to move at great speed."

Perhaps it is because the Heavenly Secrets themselves exist in a macroscopic state of 'Quantum Superposition,' containing countless possible futures. The act of divining is itself a powerful 'observation,' which inevitably affects or even 'collapses' part of the Heavenly Secrets, making the outcome difficult to predict. This may be part of the deeper reason why 'the Heavenly Secrets must not be revealed'!"
The plaza fell completely silent. Everyone was shaken by this entirely new view of the world. This was no longer a simple explanation of techniques; it was a line of thought that touched on the very origin of the Great Dao!
At last, Lin Xuan returned to the teachings of Sovereign of the Heavens: "And the sect leader's words about 'seizing a sliver of life' accord perfectly with this principle! All things in Heaven and Earth, and the river of fate, hold infinite possibilities by nature—in a wave state. We cultivators of the Interception Sect must use our great resolve and wisdom to 'observe,' 'intervene,' and 'choose' among these infinite possibilities, and 'seize' from the chaos and uncertainty that 'sliver of life'—the particle state—that is most beneficial to all beings and most likely to lead to transcendence! This is to follow the principle of microscopic change while working for the greater good on a macroscopic scale!"
When the lecture ended, Lin Xuan bowed. "What I've said is merely the humble opinion of Xuanyuanzi. My aim was only to cast a brick and draw jade, and I hope it has opened a new window of thought for you, fellow disciples. The Great Dao is boundless, and our exploration must never cease. Thank you all."
Silence held for several breaths. Then thunderous applause and excited discussion erupted! Many disciples, especially young ones with active minds who had often felt puzzled, had excitement and sudden understanding shining in their eyes. They had never imagined cultivation could be understood from such an angle! Some elders stroked their beards and pondered. They might not accept every word, but they had to admit that the lecture was highly thought-provoking and had opened up new ways of thinking.
Daoist Duobao rose to his feet, looked across the crowd, and let his voice carry throughout the plaza. "What Researcher Xuanyuanzi has shared today may not be traditional Daoist Magic, but the depth of his reasoning and the novelty of his perspective are of great benefit to our cultivation! The sect leader often says, 'The Dao has no fixed method; it adapts only through change.' Today's lecture embodies the Interception Sect's spirit of Courage to Innovate!
