Background / History
Crimson Hair Stronghold is a notorious, organized bandit force based in the Qingyun Mountain Range, on the side of the range opposite Prajna Temple. Its name derives from the conspicuous crimson hair associated with its three leaders, who are said to have been born with it. The stronghold gathers numerous desperadoes and has maintained a long-standing conflict with nearby martial sects, particularly Prajna Temple. 25
Unlike ordinary bandits, the stronghold was previously known for not preying on common people and for distributing grain from its granaries, earning it some reputation among the communities below the mountains. Its strength remained roughly balanced with that of Prajna Temple, preventing either side from decisively overcoming the other. 25
The group is reportedly composed in part of people descended from foreign tribes beyond the pass and has been entrenched in the mountain range for more than a decade. Several official suppression attempts had reportedly failed before its conflict with Prajna Temple escalated. 26
Territory and Defenses
Crimson Hair Stronghold is built into a mountainside in highly defensible terrain.
- Mountains surround the stronghold on three sides, while a single main road provides the usual approach. 26 29
- The main route is protected by visible and concealed sentries, as well as prepared rolling stones and logs. 27 29
- Its rear cliff is nearly vertical, hundreds of feet high, and normally left almost undefended because it is considered impossible to climb. Su Haoran uses this route to infiltrate the stronghold. 29 30
- The bandits employ poisoned arrows, crossbows, rockslides, and ambush positions such as One-Line Sky Valley. 27 28 29

Operations and Tactics
Ambush Warfare
The stronghold exploits mountain terrain to isolate and overwhelm enemies.
- Xiong Ba orders an ambush at One-Line Sky Valley, intending to seal the route with a rockslide and eliminate Elder Hui Jue’s delegation with archers. 27
- More than one hundred bandits take part in the ambush against the Prajna Temple party. 28
- Pursuing forces use poisoned crossbow bolts to trap the injured monks in a mountain hollow. 28 29
Raiding and Guerrilla Attacks
After Liao Fan and Ghost Shadow Leopard Cat are killed, Xiong Ba avoids direct confrontation with Prajna Temple’s elders and begins sustained hit-and-run attacks.
- The bandits block mountain roads and rob passing merchants. 36
- They burn three Prajna Temple estates, kill more than a dozen tenants, and kill two junior monks sent to purchase supplies. 36
- Xiong Ba withdraws into the deep mountains when confronted, then resumes raids after temple forces leave. 36
- A patrol led by Wujing is lured into an ambush; several monks die protecting him. 36
Enhanced Bandits
During the clash with the Qingshi Army, Crimson Hair Stronghold’s fighters display abnormal physical strength and ferocity.
- Their eyes are bloodshot, faint red patterns pulse beneath their skin, and they appear unusually resistant to pain. 37
- Even crudely armed bandits can match well-equipped soldiers through reckless endurance and forceful attacks. 37
Relationships
- Prajna Temple — Long-standing enemy. The stronghold’s attempted theft from the Scripture Repository triggers an open escalation, including the One-Line Sky ambush and later raids on temple properties. 25 27 36
- Su Haoran — Major adversary. He repels the Stronghold’s infiltrator, rescues Prajna Temple’s trapped monks, infiltrates the stronghold, and kills Ghost Shadow Leopard Cat and Liao Fan. 25 29 30 32
- Elder Hui Jue — Target of Xiong Ba’s planned ambush at One-Line Sky Valley; Hui Jue is injured by Xiong Ba while leading his disciples out of the encirclement. 27 28
- Qingshi Army — Hostile force ordered to eradicate the stronghold after its raids disrupt Qingshi City’s trade routes; the two sides engage in a costly battle. 36 37

In response to Prajna Temple’s delegation seeking accountability, Xiong Ba orders an ambush at One-Line Sky Valley. Elder Hui Jue and his disciples are trapped and injured, but Su Haoran arrives, defeats the pursuing crossbowmen, and decides to eliminate the source of the attacks. 27 28 29
