Background / History
In his youth, Wang Changhai was reputedly daring and fierce: he could fight four opponents at once and carved out his position in Loyalty Hall with a broadsword. By the time of the struggle over Jili Pier, however, alcohol and women had worn down his body; despite his solid build, he became winded after only a short walk. 1
During the pier conflict with the Fierce Tiger Gang, Wang initially believed Loyalty Hall held the advantage. Chen Niu’s arrival as the Fierce Tiger Gang’s hired fighter shattered that confidence, though Lin Fan’s defeat of Chen restored Wang’s position and let him taunt rival Hall Master Yuan Jiang. 1
Wang discovered Lin Fan enduring repeated beatings as Body Refinement training and was deeply moved by Lin’s declaration that he wished to protect him. Convinced that Lin was loyal and capable, Wang promoted him to leader of Jili Pier and gave him a pouch of money as a confidant. 4 5
At Cui Jing Tower, Wang was publicly humiliated after discovering that a mistress had betrayed him with Sun Yaowei. Lin Fan’s arrival, defeat of Sun’s eighteen fighters, and forced apology from Sun Yaowei allowed Wang to regain face. Emboldened by Lin’s presence, Wang made Sun Yaowei continue kowtowing even after Sun Xiao arrived to retrieve his son. 8 9 10
Wang later welcomed Lin Fan into his home and became distressed when Lin revealed his plan to enter the Security Bureau. Though he wanted Lin to remain at Loyalty Hall, he ultimately said that he respected Lin’s choice. 12 13
After Lin became a Security Bureau officer and arrested He Sen, Wang warned him that Loyalty Hall’s leadership wanted to see him and likely intended harm. He accompanied Lin to the meeting with Chen Qingshan and the other Hall Masters, then openly sided with Lin during the confrontation. 39 40 41
