Background / History

Sun Xiao assigned Li to recruit Lin Fan after Lin defeated Sun Yaowei's eighteen fighters at Cui Jing Tower. Li judged that Lin's lack of local connections and apparent restraint before Sun Xiao made him susceptible to recruitment. His proposed method was gradual: offer small favors, build familiarity, then exploit Wang Changhai's suspicion—or spread rumors to create it—if Lin refused. Sun Xiao granted him access to the gang's funds for the operation 10.

Li promptly approached Lin under the name Li San and invited him to Xianwei Tower. Lin brought the entire Jili Pier group and ordered the restaurant's most expensive dishes. Li accepted the expense as a test of his sincerity, ultimately paying sixty taels for the first three-table banquet 11 12.
