Background
Matsushita was a longtime subordinate of Shu Keqin, the founder of Keqin Exorcist Agency. Keqin trusted him with the agency's methods and told him that exorcism, divination, and similar work were based on observation, psychological deduction, and deception rather than genuine supernatural power. Matsushita also compiled more than half of the agency's supernatural-case files. 25 26
Following Keqin's death and Shu Yunwen's two-year coma, Matsushita became the agency's president. Although he was described to Yunwen as a loyal subordinate of Keqin, he did not visit or contact Yunwen during the month and a half after his awakening. 25 26
Personality
Matsushita initially treats Yunwen's claim to the agency as a challenge to his authority. He insists that, as president, he makes the decisions and cites the unanimous support of all fifty employees; he also dismisses Yunwen's exorcist abilities as the same fraud Keqin had described to him. 25 26
After Yunwen casts Ill Luck Follows on him, Matsushita's confidence collapses. A day of repeated misfortune leaves him disheveled, frightened for his family, and willing to kneel and beg Yunwen to remove the spell. 27 28
Thereafter, he is markedly respectful and compliant, addressing Yunwen as “Master Yunwen” or “Lord Yunwen.” He remains useful as an administrator: reporting financial problems, handling communications, distributing business cards, and negotiating contracts Yunwen does not wish to manage personally. 29 33 41 49
Agency Duties
- Reported that the agency had only ¥500,000 remaining while facing ¥13.5 million in salaries within three days; its troubles stemmed from a failed exorcism, a nearly ¥25 million compensation payment, and declining business. 33 34
- Arranged meetings and relayed client communications, including Yamagishi Eiichi's request concerning Ono Yoko. 37 41
- Handed Keqin Exorcist Agency business cards to prospective clients at Yunwen's instruction. 29 30
- Was entrusted to negotiate a long-term cooperation arrangement with Akechi Kunihito's agency. 42 49
- Assisted Yunwen with the recovery and disposal of the Maple Leaf Gold Coins, including preparing pebbles, bags, and containers. 43 44
- Was told to handle the gold coins without involving Yunwen further. 47
Relationships
- Shu Yunwen — Formerly resisted Yunwen's succession as president, but became his fearful and obedient vice president after experiencing Yunwen's curse. Yunwen relies on him for agency administration and secrecy. 25 27 41 44
- Shu Keqin — His longtime superior and the agency's founder. Keqin trusted Matsushita with the supposed tricks behind the agency's exorcism work. 25 26
- Adachi Roppei — Matsushita's secretary, who assists with agency communications and drives during the meeting with Ikezawa Yuko. 25 27
- Akechi Kunihito — Worked with Matsushita on negotiations for a long-term cooperation agreement between their agencies. 42 49
Story Role / Major Arcs
Keqin Exorcist Agency Succession
Matsushita meets Yunwen as the agency's incumbent president and refuses to relinquish control. Yunwen responds by placing Ill Luck Follows on him and threatening stronger curses against him, his family, and his friends if he remains defiant. 25 26
The curse forces Matsushita to submit the following day. He begs Yunwen not to extend the spell to his family and begins serving him as a subordinate. 27 28
Ono Yoko Case
Matsushita brings Ikezawa Yuko's request to curse Ono Yoko to Yunwen, hoping the high-profile work will restore the agency's reputation. Yunwen rebukes him for treating harmful curses as routine business, but agrees to consider the matter once. 27 28
At Ono Yoko's crime scene, Matsushita receives Ghost Eye from Yunwen and sees a newborn ghost for the first time. The experience confirms that Yunwen's supernatural abilities are genuine. 29 30
Financial Crisis and Gold Coins
Matsushita informs Yunwen that the agency must raise ¥15 million before payday. He accompanies Yunwen in pursuing the stolen Maple Leaf Gold Coins as a solution to the crisis. 33 34
While recovering the coins, he witnesses Yunwen use Fujie Akiyoshi's ghost to move objects and erase their footprints. Yunwen then appears to consume and disperse the ghost's soul power as a warning, offers Matsushita ten percent of the proceeds, and demands his silence. 43 44
Client Operations
Matsushita supports Yunwen's exorcism of Fujie Akiyoshi's vengeful spirit and is assigned responsibility for discussing a prospective partnership with Akechi Kunihito. 41 42
When Ono Yoko later asks about Fujie's spirit, Matsushita avoids answering despite knowing what happened to it, too frightened to reveal Yunwen's actions. 49 50
