Background / History

Shu Yunwen belongs to a hereditary line of Ghost Sorcerers whose cultivation centers on newly born ghosts. His lineage uses Judgment to annihilate evil souls or purify good ones, converting their energy into nourishment and Sorcerous Power. Without regular nourishment from such ghosts, a Ghost Sorcerer suffers a backlash that progressively ages their appearance. 1 2

While pursuing the ghost of a killed robber, Yunwen was struck by a car driven by drunk youths. Mortally wounded, he used Ghost Claw to wield the ghost against them, killing all five youths with a utility pole before shredding their souls. 1 2

He survived in a coma for two years. Upon waking, he discovered that he had replaced the original Shu Yunwen in 1990s Japan; the body's parents had died in the accident. He was taken in by his aunt and uncle, Kojima Mie and Kojima Genji, and learned that he was the cousin of Kojima Genta. 3 4

To reassure his relatives, Yunwen returned to Teitan High School while agreeing to manage his late father Shu Keqin's exorcism agency during his spare time. He soon realized that he had entered the world of Detective Conan, becoming Kudo Shinichi's classmate shortly before Shinichi's transformation into Conan Edogawa. 3 6 21 22

He is not driven by Shinichi's uncompromising pursuit of truth. Yunwen initially considers concealing Hitomi's crime out of sympathy, but abandons that idea once he learns she intends to frame Aiko. 17 20

Despite his ruthless streak, he has clear limits: he tests Ikezawa Yuko's intentions by offering a lethal curse, intending to reject her if she accepts, and refuses to use his powers carelessly merely for money. 27 28
