Fu Qian investigated the sanatorium’s shifting time, Madam Tracy’s unseen observer, and the people manipulating events around him. After learning about Lasik and the Well of Time, he followed the night guard, who revealed the danger beyond the grounds and asked him to expose the sanatorium.

• Fu Qian escaped his restraints, learned from Madam Tracy that an unseen presence had drained her desire, and went to her residence to wait for it with her.
• At quarter past six, Fu Qian revealed the Recorder in the shadows, and Old Man explained how his dead son helped search the sanatorium’s recordings.
• Fu Qian and Old Man found a record of Lasik’s break-in, then traced her last known appearance to Selvis’s office as time jumped ahead to the 52nd.
• Fu Qian met the Lady in the Black Room, who recognized his description of Lasik and explained her connection to Xiao Tong and Tracy’s male companion.
• Fu Qian linked the time jumps to people’s hidden emotional darkness, knocked out the Lady in the Black Room, and found a locked safe in the companion’s residence.

Fu Qian uncovered the struggle between the Director and Selvis over the sanatorium, then learned how Lasik and the Harbinger were tied to Selvis’s notebook. He allied with Selvis to draw the Harbinger into the attending physician’s office, where the three-way confrontation began.

• Fu Qian discovered that the train would not arrive until the next day and realized the Unyielding Man’s actions had kept him from escaping on Day 53.
• Fu Qian followed the Unyielding Man toward Selvis’s office, recognized the Director’s conflicting instructions, and ordered the Unyielding Man to leave and clear the floor.
• Fu Qian waited outside the office as silent patients gathered behind the basement gate, then entered, found a concealed compartment, and used the Director’s key to open Selvis’s safe.
• Fu Qian found Selvis’s notebook and recognized entries about the Blood Clan and his own note about Jia Keke, then discovered an entry saying Lasik could not leave the sanatorium.
