Background / History

Hans served under Luo Yi Amos in the Marines’ Detention Unit, which escorts already-captured criminals rather than routinely fighting on the front lines. He resented the unit’s reputation among other Marines as credit-sharing slackers, arguing that prisoner escorts still face danger and earn little merit. Luo Yi immediately reprimanded him for complaining instead of working. 1

He commonly handled the warship’s helm and received orders alongside Fal, including preparing the temporary prison and notifying headquarters after prisoner transfers. 1 5 6

Before the story, Hans brought Luo Yi a South Sea Sea Beast Mask as a souvenir. Luo Yi later gave the inexpensive mask to his Slice Clone, creating the disguised identity of Rooster. 7

Following the Master Port incident, Hans privately voiced jealousy of Luo Yi and ambition to take his position. Despite this, Fal noted that Hans had been visibly distressed when Luo Yi went alone on the dangerous mission and was among the first to greet him upon his return. 16

Hans was promoted to Sergeant and proudly displayed his badge, provoking Fal’s irritation. 23 By the Detention Unit’s later mission against the Spade Pirates, he held the rank of Chief Petty Officer. 46

Personality

Hans is outspoken, excitable, and frequently reckless with his remarks. He openly complains about the Detention Unit’s treatment, speculates wildly about major incidents, and often aggravates Fal by flaunting his rank. 1 16 23

He is also ambitious and jealous of Luo Yi’s authority, yet his behavior shows personal loyalty to his commander and comrades. He obeyed Luo Yi’s orders during emergencies, worried about injured shipmates Morr and Lanster, and remained on deck with Fal ready to intervene if Luo Yi fell against Hanafuda. 16 49 50
