Background / History
Crocodile founded and secretly led the criminal organization Baroque Works under the codename Mr. 0. Because he was a Shichibukai, he concealed his leadership; most orders were relayed through his partner, Nico Robin, leaving his identity unknown even to the organization’s members 32.
His Utopia Plan sought to seize Alabasta’s throne and obtain information on the ancient weapon Pluton. He used Dancing Powder to create a prolonged drought, intending to frame King Cobra once a cache of the substance was “discovered” in the royal capital 20.
After the Rain Summoner interfered with the drought and Robin reported finding a Pluton clue, Crocodile returned to Alabasta. At Spider Cafe, he found Robin allied with the masked Dragon of the Chen, who falsely claimed the title of Mr. 0 and control of Baroque Works 32.
Crocodile fought Dragon of the Chen in the desert near Elma. Although he adapted to the opponent’s water-based countermeasures and nearly killed him with a venomous needle, Dragon of the Chen used dual Ice and Magma Elementalization before defeating him with a combined strike 33 34 35 36. His death was subsequently reported across the sea 37 39.
Appearance
Crocodile is a scarred man with slicked-back hair and a cigar usually held between his teeth. His left hand is replaced by a large golden hook 32.
- Wears a hooded coat.
- Has a long scar across his face.
- Uses a large golden hook as a prosthetic left hand.
- Conceals a venom-coated short needle beneath or in place of the hook during battle 36.
Personality
Crocodile believes that power is the sole force that determines outcomes on the sea. He regards Baroque Works as an extension of his own strength and treats betrayal as something that must be answered with death 32 33.
He is calculating and pragmatic rather than honor-bound. When faced with Dragon of the Chen’s ability to exploit his weakness, he created distance and relied on large-scale sand attacks instead of accepting close combat, stating that face and honor “only appear on tombstones” 35.
Despite his arrogance and tendency to underestimate opponents, Crocodile enjoys danger and becomes more animated when facing a genuine threat. His past defeat by Whitebeard remained a sensitive subject 33 34.
Abilities & Skills
Sand-Sand Fruit
Crocodile possesses the Logia-type Sand-Sand Fruit, allowing him to become, create, and control sand. In Alabasta’s desert environment, he can manipulate enormous volumes of sand with comparatively little stamina expenditure 33 35.
- Can transform his body into yellow sand for mobility and to evade ordinary attacks.
- Can generate quicksand capable of swallowing buildings and reshaping the battlefield 32 33.
- Uses desert sand as an extension of his body, attacking opponents from range 35.
- His elemental body is vulnerable to water; wetted portions cannot transform into sand 34.
- Uses sand curtains to block rainfall before it reaches him 34.
Desert: Sunflower
Crocodile transforms the ground and surrounding structures into a vast field of quicksand, burying Spider Cafe and its vicinity beneath the desert 32 33.
- Creates a large-scale, unstable sand pit.
- Can use the affected terrain to separate himself from opponents and attack from range.
Desert Treasure Sword
Crocodile forms massive blades of sand that can cut through rock formations and carve deep trenches through the desert 34 35.
- Can shatter multiple ice shields with a single strike 34.
- Effective as a long-range cutting attack.
Corrosion Samsara
Crocodile drives both hands into the ground and spreads an effect that drains moisture from the surrounding terrain, reducing stone to dust 36.
- Removes moisture from the battlefield.
- Was used alongside a massive sandstorm to counter Dragon of the Chen’s giant wave.
- Could not fully absorb the moisture contained in the incoming wave 36.
Heavy Sandstorm
By intensifying the sand around him, Crocodile creates a large sandstorm to clash with and disrupt incoming attacks 36.
- Combined with Corrosion Samsara against a water-based assault.
- Was overwhelmed when Dragon of the Chen’s wave broke through the storm 36.
Haki and Combat Cunning
Crocodile possesses Observation Haki, allowing him to perceive that Dragon of the Chen’s incoming punch lacked Haki coating 33.
- Exploited his apparent defeat to hide a severed hand beneath the sand.
- Used the concealed hand to launch a surprise attack with a venom-coated needle 36.
- His left-hand hook and needle carry potent scorpion venom said to be fatal without an antidote 36.
Relationships
- Nico Robin — His partner and the public intermediary for Mr. 0’s orders; she ultimately allied with Dragon of the Chen against him 32.
- Dragon of the Chen — Rival who challenged his authority over Baroque Works, exploited the Sand-Sand Fruit’s weakness to water, and killed him 32 34 36.
- King Nefertari Cobra — Target of Crocodile’s Utopia Plan to usurp Alabasta through an engineered drought and false accusation 20.
- Baroque Works — Organization he founded and commanded in secret as Mr. 0; it was taken over by Dragon of the Chen after his death 32 39 44.
- Whitebeard — Previously defeated Crocodile during Crocodile’s youth; the loss remained a source of resentment 33.

Conflict with the Twelve Zodiacs

Crocodile initially dominates the desert battlefield with quicksand, sand blades, and moisture-draining techniques. He loses after Dragon of the Chen counters his sand with rain, ice, a massive wave, and dual Ice-Magma Elementalization 34 35 36.
