"The six kings are vanquished, the four seas unified, Mount Shu is bare, and Afang Palace emerges..."
"Later generations mourn them but do not learn from them, thus causing later generations to mourn later generations again."
"The sky is blue, waiting for the rain, and I am waiting for you~"
"What are you eating? Give me some too."
"..."
The noisy morning reading sounds of the classmates entered Gu Panyan's ears. She glanced at the off-key "singer" sitting by the window, then looked up slightly at the stern face outside the window, above the "singer."
Following the gaze of that stern face, she saw a pair of deskmates huddled together sneakily, sharing a bag of spicy strips.
A hint of pity entered her eyes, and she nudged Wang Ge, who was sleeping with his head on his desk, with her arm.
Wang Ge immediately sat up straight. Before he even opened his eyes, he was already reciting the text skillfully:
"The six kings are vanquished, the four seas unified, Mount Shu is bare, and Afang Palace emerges..."
Only after the three unfortunate students were called out of the classroom did Wang Ge breathe a sigh of relief and slump back onto his desk, ready to continue sleeping.
"Are you planning to sleep all morning?" Gu Panyan couldn't help but ask.
"Yeah, that's right." Wang Ge yawned and said, "If I don't sleep in the morning, should I be reciting texts?"
Reciting texts is the normal thing to do... Gu Panyan muttered, "I really don't know how someone like you can get first place..."
"There will always be many incomprehensible geniuses in this world," Wang Ge said lazily, still lying on his desk. "And your deskmate, me, is one of them."
"Get outta here." Gu Panyan scoffed. "If you're a genius, how come you can't even beat Chen Yanxi?"
Because Chen Yanxi is a monster... Wang Ge muttered to himself, but outwardly he argued stubbornly, "It's just that I don't want to study. If I put in even a little effort, I could surpass her easily, okay?"
Gu Panyan raised an eyebrow and said, "Then show me you can surpass her."
"Not interested." Wang Ge yawned again. "Studying is too boring. My current grades are more than enough to get into any university. There's no need to do something so pointless for a matter of pride and waste time."
"Then sleeping here isn't a waste of time?"
"At least sleeping isn't boring." Wang Ge's voice gradually became hazy. "The world in my dreams is very exciting. I can have all sorts of wonderful experiences, I can have a beautiful and gentle girlfriend..."
By the end, his voice was so quiet it was almost inaudible.
Gu Panyan pursed her lips, but she had no intention of disturbing Wang Ge's sleep.
She took out an earphone from her pocket and put it on. She tucked her hair behind her ear, letting her long black hair cover the earphone, then shifted her gaze to the textbook, pretending to read.
Listening to music was one of her few hobbies.
Soon, the first morning reading session ended, and the second began.
Wang Ge slept like a log. Gu Panyan, perhaps infected by Wang Ge, was immersed in music and felt her eyelids getting heavier and heavier. Eventually, she slumped onto her desk like Wang Ge and drifted off to dreamland.
But she felt like she had only just closed her eyes when, after a few minutes, she was woken up.
She opened her eyes to see the face of the English teacher, a man in his thirties wearing gold-rimmed glasses, with a half-smile on his face.
She turned her head and saw that Wang Ge was already being made to stand. He lowered his head and shot her a look of shared misfortune.
Seeing this, Gu Panyan consciously stood up as well.
"What time is it, and you're still sleeping in class? You two aren't worried at all." The English teacher's eyes, hidden behind his gold-rimmed glasses, swept over them sharply. "So, have you finished memorizing the essay I assigned?"
The two of them obediently lowered their heads and said nothing.
"Since that's the case, I'll check your recitation during the second class this afternoon. If you can't recite it, you'll have to copy it ten times, understand?"
It sounded like he was asking for their opinion, but they had been caught sleeping and were already feeling guilty. Moreover, Gu Panyan still had earphones in her ears, with music playing, which made her even more guilty. She didn't dare to argue, so she could only agree to the English teacher's terms.
"No objections, then? It's settled." The English teacher gave them one last look before leaving, dropping a parting remark: "You two will stand for the rest of morning reading to sober up, so you don't fall asleep again later."
"Ah, no more sleeping." After the English teacher left, Wang Ge said softly, with some regret.
Gu Panyan couldn't help but retort sarcastically, "You've been sleeping all morning."
"One morning isn't enough." Wang Ge said matter-of-factly. "I was planning to sleep for another class later."
"What did you do last night that you're so sleepy?" Gu Panyan asked curiously.
"I was watching short videos." Wang Ge sighed. "I clearly felt like I hadn't been watching for long, but when I checked the time, it was already three in the morning..."
Gu Panyan gave him a thumbs-up, and discreetly removed her earphones.
"Did you memorize your English essay?" Wang Ge turned and asked her.
"No." She shook her head.
"Then hurry up and memorize it!" Wang Ge said with a hint of schadenfreude. "If you can't recite it, you'll have to copy it ten times."
"I can't even get through reading it." Gu Panyan pouted.
"Take your time. There's still a lot of time before the second class this afternoon," Wang Ge comforted her.
"Did you finish memorizing it?" Gu Panyan glanced at Wang Ge.
"I finished it a long time ago." Wang Ge said calmly. "Memorizing this stuff is simple. You just need to remember the Chinese meaning, a few key words and phrases, and then translate the Chinese into English."
You make it sound so easy. Gu Panyan dismissed Wang Ge's words with disdain and was too lazy to respond further, her gaze gradually becoming distant.
"You're not going to memorize it? You want to copy it ten times?"
Wang Ge's voice interrupted her daze.
Gu Panyan said helplessly, "I told you, I can't even read it, how can I memorize it?"
"I can teach you," Wang Ge said.
"You'll teach me?"
"That's right, I'll teach you how to read and how to memorize it. I'm sure I can get you to memorize it before English class this afternoon," Wang Ge said confidently.
Don't worry, big bro's got a cheat, I'll carry you.
This was the first step in Wang Ge's plan: first, he needed to help Gu Panyan build some confidence in herself and in studying. He wanted her to realize that as long as she was willing to work hard, she would definitely see results; as long as she was willing to study, she would definitely be able to learn.
When a person clearly knows that their efforts will inevitably yield results, and can intuitively feel the extent of those results, then without anyone's supervision, they will spontaneously work incredibly hard.
The same applied to studying.
For Wang Ge, who possessed a "cheat," achieving this was not difficult; it could even be said to be very simple.
This was only the first step. He had a series of subsequent steps, such as letting Gu Panyan see tangible improvements in her scores, seeing the hope of getting into university within three months, and thus igniting her passion for learning.
For those walking in darkness, the most terrifying thing is not the lack of food, nor the loneliness of being alone, but the inability to see any light, the inability to see hope of escaping the darkness.
What Wang Ge intended to do was to place this hope before Gu Panyan, and then help her build a path out of the darkness, towards the light, towards hope.
