Clearly, the decision the Green Lantern Corps had made had enraged the Avengers. After all, Earth had always been the target the Avengers protected. What right did the Green Lantern Corps, an alien force, have to make choices for Earth?
When all the Avengers' expressions turned hostile, Steve took a deep breath and said in a low voice, "They dare call themselves Guardians of the Universe? Forcing others to sacrifice themselves to buy time? If sacrifice is truly necessary, no one in the Avengers fears sacrifice—but that has to be voluntary. No one has the right to force someone else to sacrifice themselves in exchange for others' safety!"
To be honest, Steve's principles were still different from some people in the Avengers. Rationalists like Tony Stark and Reed Richards, for example, were willing to let a minority sacrifice themselves in exchange for the safety of the majority. They simply could not accept the entire Earth becoming the sacrifice to protect a universe that was completely unfamiliar to them.
Steve, however, was different. In Steve's view, if sacrificing himself could bring peace, then he would sacrifice himself without the slightest hesitation. Even if it meant sacrificing Peggy Carter, as long as Peggy Carter did it willingly, Steve would not stop her.
But if the person being sacrificed was not willing, then Steve would absolutely support their right not to be sacrificed to the death, even if that meant paying an even greater price...
Of course, at this point, when the Green Lantern Corps was preparing to sacrifice Earth, the Avengers' views were still the same. After all, no one wanted to see the Earth they cherished and protected become a sacrifice.
