"Is it done?"
In just an instant, Midori's Spiritual Power dispersed, and her aura grew somewhat listless.
Hearing his voice behind her, Midori turned around and nodded weakly. "It's done. Wait here for a moment. I'll go get you a branch from the Sacred Tree."
This woman.
She was just handing her back over to him like that?
Wasn't she afraid he would take the chance to attack her?
Didn't countless demons want to kill her?
Was she too naive to turn her back on a demon like him, or was she testing him?
Those thoughts flashed through Bai Ye's mind as he watched Midori leave. An hour later, just as Bai Ye began wondering whether she had run off, Midori returned with Kirara and the Sacred Tree. She handed the Sacred Tree over to him. "I sealed its power within it. Just take it back with you. Also, have this boxed meal. You've been busy all morning."
"I don't eat."
Bai Ye only accepted the Sacred Tree branch. As for the boxed meal Midori held out to him, he refused without a second thought.
"No! This is the villagers' goodwill. I can't finish it by myself, and I brought your portion too. You have to eat it, or it'll go to waste."
Midori stared at Bai Ye intently, clearly hoping he would eat the boxed meal.
Although she had already given him a Sacred Tree branch as payment, he had worked all morning—hauling things around and digging a well—finishing in a single day what should have taken several. The villagers had prepared food and entrusted it to Midori.
They had originally wanted to invite Midori to eat in the village, but because of Bai Ye, she had refused.
This was still a token of her appreciation. How could Bai Ye refuse it?
Midori practically forced the lunchbox into his hands.
"Ah?! It's so lavish! Look, there's so much meat."
"..."
Bai Ye glanced at the lunchbox, then looked up at Midori. This girl seemed a little unhinged.
Was she really the priestess Midori who could battle demons for days and hated evil with a passion?
She didn't seem much different from an ordinary little girl.
Still, according to the manga, Midori's death seemed to be connected to a man who had secretly loved her. Many men had loved Midori from afar, but one of them had harbored particularly dark thoughts. In the end, he fused with demons and lured Midori into a lava cave. There, Midori fought the demons for seven days and seven nights. When exhaustion finally left her about to be devoured, she unleashed the last of her Spiritual Power, merging both herself and the demons into the Shikon Jewel.
Even after her body died, her soul continued fighting the demons within the Shikon Jewel.
It sounded somewhat similar to how Naraku and Kikyo's story had begun.
"What kind of demon are you? And why are you draping yourself in all that fluff? Aren't you hot?"
"This is my tail."
Bai Ye answered flatly, then signaled with his eyes for Midori to take her hand off it.
"Hehe, it's pretty soft."
Midori chuckled awkwardly and sheepishly pulled her hand back.
"A dog demon?"
Midori suddenly realized that, judging from his features, he seemed to belong to the Dog Demon Clan.
"Yeah."
Bai Ye nodded, then opened the lunchbox. It was not quite as lavish as Midori had claimed, but after hesitating for a moment, he still took a bite.
"See? You can eat it after all."
"Has anyone ever told you that you talk too much? Priestesses and demons are enemies. After the Sacred Tree matter is settled, we might become enemies, so don't—"
Before Bai Ye could finish, Midori cut him off. "See, that's your prejudice. Humans and demons aren't necessarily enemies. Humans aren't necessarily friends with humans, and demons aren't necessarily friends with demons either. I just wanted someone to talk to. If you think I'm annoying, then I'll stop talking!"
She was a chatterbox too.
Bai Ye silently added another label to Midori.
But Midori felt somewhat disappointed. As a powerful priestess, she was revered and admired by everyone in the human world.
Demons feared her, while also wanting nothing more than to kill her. Sometimes, Midori felt rather lonely.
She possessed the power to protect everything, and those she protected revered her. A barrier had already formed between them.
Meeting Bai Ye had indeed been somewhat unexpected, but after the two had helped each other this time, Midori had considered them friends. Yet Bai Ye's attitude just now made her realize that he did not seem to want to be her friend.
Could demons and humans really not become friends?
For a moment, Midori sank into confusion. But in the next instant, her eyes became resolute. A conviction had formed in her heart as she raised her head, ate, and watched Bai Ye.
"Is something wrong with this woman?"
She had to stare at him even while eating. Bai Ye kept his head down and ate without looking at Midori, but several times, he instinctively wanted to check whether she was still staring at him.
The answer was obvious. Once she stopped talking, Midori switched to staring at Bai Ye with her eyes, and it made his fur stand on end.
Yokai Byakuya: [Brothers, I think a woman has her eye on me. How do I get rid of her?] Hokage Byakuya: [Holy shit? You're getting out of the singles club already? I'm jealous, brother!] Pirate Byakuya: [Who is it?] Yokai Byakuya: [Midori. And I'm not getting out of the singles club. It's just that this chick seems kind of nuts.] Slice of Life Byakuya: [Oh? Midori, the creator of the Shikon Jewel? You've got this, brother. What's there to fear? Just go for it! Have a romance between a demon and a priestess during the Sengoku period!]
Did he even need to think about it?
Wouldn't it be over if he just went for it?
Yokai Byakuya: [What? Humans die after a hundred years or so. Why the hell would I date her?] Pirate Byakuya: [I'll get you some Pure Gold, so don't worry. If you like her, go for it. Why worry about lifespan? Worst case, put her inside the Sacred Tree!] Hokage Byakuya: [It'd be rude to keep twisting yourself up over it!]
Inuyasha World.
He wanted to explain, but in the end, he did not know how to put it.
He did not want to date Midori?!
Hadn't he joined the Chat Group to ask them for a way to get rid of Midori?
He raised his head and looked at Midori again. She was still staring at him with blazing eyes. Bai Ye asked helplessly, "What exactly do you want?"
"Let's be friends!"
Midori wanted a friend, someone she could talk to.
"The kind who can talk, occasionally help each other out, like we just did. And I was planning to travel around this world anyway. Would you be willing to come with me?"
Midori was not acting on a whim. She had long wanted to see more of this world, but on one hand, matters in the Demon Extermination Village had not been settled, and on the other, traveling alone was not what she wanted.
So she had suppressed the thought. But now that Bai Ye was here, she wanted to become friends with him and travel the world with a friend.
Besides, she could tell that Bai Ye, like her, had a lonely soul.
Perhaps they both longed for friends.
"Sorry, Father. Looks like I'll need to travel for a while before I can go to your side!"
Bai Ye fell silent for a moment. Facing Midori's expectant gaze, he felt that Inu Taisho should be able to hold out for now.
Even if he went over there at this point, he might not be able to help much. It would be better to travel first, improve his strength, and then head to the battlefield.
Besides, he was curious about what changes would happen if he became involved in Midori's life.
Friends.
Bai Ye truly had none in this demon world. As Inu Taisho's son and the eldest young master of Dog Castle, his status alone created an unbridgeable gap between him and many others.
There was no shortage of demons around him who flattered him, feared him, or feared the Inu Taisho behind him. Even Sesshomaru spent most of his time competing with Bai Ye.
"My name is Midori. What's yours?"
"Byakuyasha."
"Mhm, mhm. Byakuyasha, what kind of dog demon are you?"
"?"
If you can't talk, then don't talk!
Bai Ye turned his head and glared at Midori. Was this woman calling him a dog?
Though... she seemed to be right?
"Probably a big white dog? Look, even your tail is white."
Perhaps because she had made her first friend, Midori suddenly became much more talkative. Even Kirara, standing nearby, was surprised by how much Midori had spoken today.
"Midori, don't touch my tail!!!"
"?"
Midori turned her head. It was as though some threshold had been unlocked, and her hand unconsciously reached out to stroke it again. The more she was forbidden from touching it, the more she wanted to.
But she thought of how she had finally made a friend. If she scared Bai Ye away like this, wouldn't that be a huge loss?
Bai Ye had chosen to travel with Midori partly because her words had struck straight at his heart. He too wanted a friend he could talk to. Another reason was that he wanted to see whether Midori would still become the Shikon Jewel after his intervention. In any case, with the other Byakuyas in other worlds, he could become stronger later by acquiring their abilities, even if Midori not becoming the Shikon Jewel greatly altered the plot.
Besides, the Shikon Jewel would not set the plot in motion for many years yet. There was no need to rush.
The last reason was Midori's formidable strength. Bai Ye had originally only wanted to get some Sacred Tree branches and return home, but with Midori around, he could completely ask some Great Demons for a few things.
Since he was forging a good blade, he could gather everything he could. Bai Ye naturally had no intention of replacing this sword.
"Then let's set out today. Is there anywhere you want to go?"
Midori wanted to ask Bai Ye's opinion first.
If it were up to her, she probably would have simply wandered around without any destination.
"Mount Hōrai."
"Is there some reason you absolutely have to go there?"
Midori asked curiously.
"I need to forge a Demonic Blade." Seeing Midori still looking at him in confusion, Bai Ye continued explaining, "Every fifty years, Mount Hōrai's barrier weakens. When that happens, the Four Fiends attack the place. I want to kill the Four Fiends and make them part of my Demonic Blade!"
Forging a Demonic Blade from the bodies of Great Demons would naturally be ideal. Back then, he had worried that he was not strong enough to deal with the Four Fiends, so he had not given it much thought.
But if Midori came with him, then with her strength, the two of them could absolutely handle the Four Fiends.
"So you're treating me as muscle?"
Midori stared at Bai Ye with a gloomy look. She understood now. This guy was treating her like hired muscle!
"Don't you hate evil? The Four Fiends slaughter the innocent. You'd be eliminating harm for the people, and so would I. We'd both be doing it. We both have a bright future!"
"I never thought you were this kind of big dog!"
This guy!
One look was enough to tell that he was secretly shameless. No... maybe he was shameless out in the open, but had been holding it in until now.
"Midori, don't tell me you're scared?"
"Who said I'm scared! I've heard of the Four Fiends too. If that's the case, then let's go!"
Watching Midori's back, Bai Ye secretly laughed. A little provocation really was effective against a sheltered little girl like her.
Still, he should stop pretending to be cold and aloof. He felt much more relaxed all over.
As expected, imitating Sesshomaru and acting cold and aloof every day was really exhausting. It was much easier to return to his true nature.
"No, you're using me!"
As Midori walked, the more she thought about it, the more something felt wrong. It felt like Bai Ye was up to no good.
This big dog did not look like a good demon at all!
"We're friends. How can you call it using you? Think of it another way. We're going together to kill evil demons. You would definitely purify those demons afterward anyway, right? Since they're going to be purified, why not let me make use of the waste? Isn't that reasonable? You kill evil demons, I take the demon corpses that are useless to you, and we save Mount Hōrai. The villagers on the island will thank you. You gain praise. Isn't that great?"
"Why didn't I realize you talked so much before?"
Midori muttered, but she did not refute him. Looking at it another way, it really did seem as Bai Ye said.
After persuading Midori, one human and two demons swiftly flew toward Mount Hōrai.
"Bai Ye, Kirara is tired. Can I ride on your tail with her?"
"No!"
Bai Ye looked at Midori's gleaming eyes and refused without a second thought.
One look told him this woman was up to something.
"Bai Ye... you wouldn't want us to miss our chance to get onto Mount Hōrai because we wasted time, would you?"
Midori spoke in a sinister tone. After spending the past few days together, her relationship with Bai Ye had improved considerably.
She had also come to understand that Bai Ye only looked cold and aloof on the surface. Inside, he was an incredibly sly and black-bellied fellow.
Meanwhile, Midori was a bit of a chatterbox and also somewhat black-bellied herself.
"You can't ride on my tail, but I can carry you."
"Hey, hey, hey, put me down!!"
Bai Ye slung Midori over his shoulder. The panic in Midori's eyes flashed away as she struggled a little, inwardly thinking that this was not how things were supposed to go!
Seeing Midori's expression, Bai Ye laughed inwardly. And she thought she could threaten him?
