Background / History

Mito was one of the Uzumaki Clan's foremost fighters during the Warring States period, earning the epithet “Red Rose” after fighting through “mountains of corpses and seas of blood.” She later married Hashirama Senju and became a leading figure within the Senju Clan. Even after Hashirama's death, her power and authority made her far more than a ceremonial widow. 3

Following Tobirama Senju's death, Mito interrogated Hiruzen Sarutobi and the survivors in detail. Her chakra leakage, amplified by her status as the Nine-Tails' jinchūriki, placed them under immense pressure. She used Kurama's ability to sense emotions to confirm that their account was truthful, but remained doubtful that Hiruzen was worthy of succeeding Tobirama as Hokage. 2

Mito ordered Hiruzen and his party treated within the Senju compound, forbade them from leaving, and attempted to keep Tobirama's death secret. Her actions left Hiruzen fearing that she might remove him before he could assume the Hokage position. 3

When Uchiha Nan awakened the Mangekyō Sharingan and became Uchiha Clan Head, Mito considered him a greater threat than Madara: a powerful Uchiha who could hide his ambitions until the ideal moment. Believing neither Hiruzen nor her son Touma could stop him, she prepared to rely on the Nine-Tails' power herself. 20

After Nan killed Hiruzen and Danzō, Mito challenged him in the Forest of Death to protect Touma and Konoha.
