Background / History

Tobirama helped Hashirama Senju establish and develop Konoha. As Hokage, he opposed allowing the Senju Clan to retain the office for a third consecutive generation, fearing that the clan would equate itself with the village; he therefore rejected Senju Touma as a successor despite considering him qualified. During an ambush, he accepted Hiruzen Sarutobi's offer to serve as a decoy and named him the Third Hokage. 1 60

After his death, Uchiha Nan summoned him through Impure World Reincarnation. Tobirama was immediately enraged to find an Uchiha wearing the Hokage robe, attempted to kill Nan, and resolved to escape after learning that Hiruzen had died. 56 Nan instead kept him confined in an underground laboratory, using control over his Edo Tensei body—and later Tsunade's safety—to compel his cooperation. 62 63

Though initially hostile, Tobirama became indispensable to Nan's program of research, industrialization, and military development. Their debates helped adapt Nan's political ideas into the Will of Fire textbook, which Tobirama co-authored under the name “Zhang San.” 65 85 He continued to work for Konoha despite resenting Nan's control and the public credit Nan received. 211 230

He is intensely proud of his status as the Second Hokage, his combat record, and his technical ability.
