Background
The Uchiha are descendants of Indra, elder son of the Sage of Six Paths. Their long conflict with the Senju stems from the feud between Indra and his younger brother Asura, whose descendants became the Senju Clan 275.
Uchiha Madara and Hashirama Senju ended the clans’ Warring States-era conflict and jointly founded Konohagakure. The Uchiha remained one of Konoha’s founding clans, but Madara’s eventual defection left the clan politically disadvantaged and damaged its public standing 17 122.
Under Tobirama Senju, the Uchiha Security Force held broad authority over patrols, spies, and law enforcement. The clan’s role as Konoha’s police force isolated it from ordinary villagers and the village’s political core; its harsh methods and occasional use of genjutsu against civilians further worsened relations 60.
Clan Affairs and Political Position
- The clan maintained extensive commercial holdings and land across Konoha, but supporting its large membership and funding ninja training remained costly 6.
- Prolonged war left the clan financially strained, with roughly 150 million ryō and only one month of cash flow when Uchiha Nan became Clan Head 23.
- Uchiha Nan openly removed Uchiha Tomita from leadership and took control of the clan, arguing that a new era required younger leadership 17.
- Nan treated securing the Hokage office as essential to the clan’s recovery, resource access, and political survival 23.
- As Hokage, Nan sought to rehabilitate the Uchiha’s reputation through statues, a film about Madara, and revisions to the clan’s public image 122.
- Nan later included the Uchiha in the Kekkei Genkai Great Integration Plan, encouraging intermarriage with the Senju, Uzumaki, and Hyūga clans to strengthen their bloodlines 261.
Abilities & Skills
Sharingan
The Uchiha’s hereditary dōjutsu is the foundation of the clan’s combat strength.
- Enhances perception and dynamic vision, allowing users to track opponents’ movements precisely 31.
- Can copy observed ninjutsu and taijutsu 116 231.
- Greatly strengthens genjutsu capabilities 116.
- Makes conventional training less necessary for many clan members, since techniques can be learned through observation 231.
Mangekyō Sharingan
A rare evolution attained through extreme emotional trauma and loss.
- Represents a major qualitative leap beyond the Three-Tomoe Sharingan 150.
- Awakens two powerful, user-specific ocular techniques 116 231.
- Can produce Susanoo, the clan’s greatest known combat manifestation 116 274.
- Its use risks damaging the user’s vision; before receiving Hashirama Cells, Nan avoided prolonged use because of worsening eyesight 141.
Susanoo
A giant chakra construct available to Mangekyō Sharingan users.
- Begins as a phantom head, then develops a torso and a complete humanoid giant 141.
- At the fourth stage, it can materialize weapons through ocular power and chakra 141.
- Its highest described form is an armored super-giant comparable to Madara’s Perfect Susanoo 141.
- Nan’s Perfect Susanoo overwhelms Itachi’s Susanoo and is perceived by Black Zetsu as power on Madara’s level 327.
Forbidden Dōjutsu
The clan possesses several dangerous ocular techniques.
- Izanagi — can alter reality and was used by Madara to fake his death 116 296.
- Izanami — described as a technique capable of bringing back the dead 116.
- Kotoamatsukami — Shisui Uchiha’s Mangekyō genjutsu, said to completely alter a target’s thoughts 317.
Relationships
- Senju Clan — ancestral rival clan descended from Asura; the two clans co-founded Konoha but remained divided by political distrust and historical bloodshed 60 275.
- Hyūga Clan — fellow dōjutsu clan and participant in Nan’s Kekkei Genkai Great Integration Plan 261.
- Uzumaki Clan — participant in the inter-clan integration plan; offers sealing techniques to Konoha in pursuit of closer ties 275.
- Konoha villagers — protected by the Uchiha Security Force, but the clan’s policing methods fostered resentment among civilians 60.
- Uchiha Madara — co-founder of Konoha whose defection became a lasting stain on the clan’s reputation; later rehabilitated publicly under Nan’s administration 122.
- Uchiha Nan — Clan Head and later Third Hokage who expands the clan’s political influence, wealth, and standing within Konoha 17 23 114.
Other-World Extermination
In the world entered by Uchiha Nan, the Uchiha were increasingly isolated after the Nine-Tails incident. The clan was relocated away from Konoha’s center, its funding and training resources were reduced, and suspicion of a coup intensified 317.
Danzō Shimura ordered Uchiha Itachi to massacre the clan, while Hiruzen Sarutobi later admitted that Itachi had been placed undercover after the extermination. The victims included civilians, children, and infants; Sasuke was the sole known survivor within Konoha 326 327.
Nan considers the massacre an atrocity against his own people regardless of the differences between worlds. He confronts Konoha’s leadership, takes Shisui’s Mangekyō Sharingan from Danzō, defeats Itachi, and leaves Itachi’s final fate to Sasuke 317 327.
Trivia
- The Uchiha crest and the magatama pattern of the Sharingan are immediately recognizable symbols of the clan 1.
- The clan’s ancient stone tablet is one of its few surviving historical artifacts; Nan describes the Uchiha as having preserved little ancient heritage because of their focus on combat 273.
- Uchiha women marrying outside the clan are expected to have their husbands take the Uchiha name, though the clan imposes stringent requirements even on prospective sons-in-law 252.
