Background / History
Su Mo transmigrated into the Great Wu Dynasty from a previous life in which he was an ordinary shut-in. Born into a servant family, orphaned early, and reliant on his third uncle Chen Gan, he initially considers securing a yamen Regular Servant post and living peacefully to be his highest goal. He deliberately keeps a low profile, believing that speaking and acting cautiously is necessary to survive in an unfamiliar and dangerous world. 1 2
A hundred days after transmigrating, Su Mo awakens his Golden Finger: a quest-and-favorability system that identifies certain people as quest targets. Its first quest directs him to recover Lin Moyin's lost Golden Lock, a keepsake of her deceased mother. 2
During the Locust God Temple investigation, Su Mo finds the Golden Demon Subduing Pestle concealed in the collapsed statue. He later locates the Golden Lock at West Mountain Mass Grave and returns it to Lin Moyin through the Imperial Guard. 4 14
The Golden Lock quest changes Su Mo's station dramatically. Its rewards include a Fast Hand Regular Servant appointment and an Imperial Guard Strongman position. He becomes a registered yamen official after the case involving Zhou Meng is resolved, then formally receives his Imperial Guard badge after passing Lin Moyin's test. 20 22 28
Chen Bao later gives Su Mo the Yang Tian Jue, an Immortal Cultivation Method, hoping to secure his support. The Demon Subduing Pestle enables Su Mo to begin cultivating the technique, granting him strength and speed sufficient to overpower Yan Dahu, a first-class martial retainer. 32 33 37 38
Appearance
Su Mo is tall and thin, with the outward appearance of a frail scholar rather than a yamen runner. His dignified bearing and elegant speech repeatedly lead others to mistake him for a learned man. 38 39
- Wears the blue brocade uniform and straight saber of an Imperial Guard Strongman after joining the Imperial Guard. 30
- Has a slightly youthful but resolute face, described as scholar-like. 25
- His seemingly slight build conceals exceptional physical strength. 38
Personality
Su Mo is cautious, pragmatic, and highly aware of his own limitations. He does not view transmigration as making him inherently extraordinary; instead, he seeks security, official status, money, and eventually cultivation power in a world where the strong prey on the weak. 2 32
He learns quickly from Chen Gan's guidance and becomes increasingly adept at navigating yamen politics, gifts, alliances, and the use of official authority. He recognizes when restraint is wiser than profit, but is also willing to leverage his position in the East Market and private salt business. 22 35 36 41
Despite his self-interest and occasional ruthlessness, Su Mo protects Qin Bi'er from Zhou Meng, helps Qin Bi'er and Dian Dian flee impending arrest, redeems Chen Qianyu's bracelets, and shelters Xue Yishu during her escape. 5 9 36 37
