Background / History
Lin Moyin's deceased mother left her a Golden Lock, which Lin carried closely and regarded as an irreplaceable memento. The lock was lost during a fight three days before Su Mo received the quest to recover it; its loss left her deeply regretful. 2
After Su Mo returned the lock through the Imperial Guard, Lin visibly broke from her usual cold composure. She connected the Locust God Temple's mummified-corpse case to historical Heavenly Mother Cult cases, including a thirty-year-old disaster that preceded a devastating locust plague. 15
Because Su Mo knew both the lock's owner and its location, Lin suspected that he might be connected to the Heavenly Mother Cult. Rather than confront him immediately, she ordered a background investigation and later tested him personally. 15 28
Appearance
Lin Moyin is described as a strikingly beautiful woman whose usually expressionless face makes her rare smiles especially memorable. 28 44
- Slender hands and sharp fingernails. 28 44
- Delicate brows and phoenix eyes. 44
- Her smile is compared to a winter plum blossom blooming amid ice and snow. 28
- Typically maintains a cold, unreadable expression even under pressure. 15
Personality
Lin is stern, guarded, and intensely disciplined. She insists that Imperial Guard personnel address one another by official title within the garrison, preventing even small breaches of protocol from becoming grounds for criticism. 42
Her caution shapes her leadership. She does not trust apparent intelligence at face value, investigates irregularities thoroughly, and initially views Su Mo's unexplained knowledge as possible evidence of Heavenly Mother Cult involvement. 15 28 42
Despite her intimidation tactics, Lin distinguishes usefulness from background and recruits people based on their value to the Imperial Guard rather than their origins. Her standards are notably severe: she had recruited no new members into her Hundred Households office for a year, while many existing members left because of the pressure she imposed. 28 29
Abilities & Skills
Immortal Path Cultivation
Lin is an Immortal Path cultivator whose power greatly exceeds Su Mo's early martial ability. Her cultivation realm has not been stated. 9 32
- Can threaten or overpower ordinary fighters with minimal effort. 28 32
- Uses supernatural techniques associated with the Imperial Guard, including flying-sword attacks. 9
Mysterious Jade Finger
Lin has practiced the Mysterious Jade Finger for more than ten years. It is described as a top-tier martial arts technique rather than an Immortal Path killing art. 28
- A full-strength strike can kill a fierce tiger. 28
- Even at roughly ten percent strength, it sent Su Mo reeling and left his fist throbbing in pain after he blocked it. 28
- She uses the technique with precision to test or intimidate opponents, stopping her fingers just before Su Mo's eyes rather than actually blinding him. 44
Investigation and Command
As the head of the Changping Imperial Guard office, Lin directs Dark Guards, reviews historical case files, and coordinates responses to suspected Heavenly Mother Cult activity. 15 42 43
- Identified the likely sequence of temple rituals behind the cult's planned locust plague. 15 42
- Ordered surveillance rather than an immediate raid when reports from Tieshan and Anyang Counties appeared suspiciously convenient. 42
- Recognized that Immortal Path-cultivating deacons could exceed the ability of ordinary county garrisons. 42
Equipment / Items
- Golden Lock — A treasured memento from Lin Moyin's deceased mother. Its recovery prompted her first visible emotional reaction in front of subordinates; Lin later keeps and rubs the lock in her palm while considering Su Mo. 2 15 42
- Flying swords — Weapons or techniques she can summon in combat, including against the Corpse Oil Lamp. 9
Relationships
- Su Mo — Initially suspected him of possible Heavenly Mother Cult involvement after he returned her lost Golden Lock. She tested and recruited him into the Imperial Guard, then increasingly valued his intelligence regarding the cult. 15 28 43 44
- Gao Xin — An Imperial Guard Strongman under Lin's command who guarded the office and relayed the Golden Lock to her. 14 15
- Dark Guard 0231 — A subordinate who delivered urgent intelligence confirming that the cultists at the City God Temples were impostors. 43
- Unnamed delicate-looking subordinate — A subordinate dispatched toward Tieshan County to monitor and respond to suspected Heavenly Mother Cult activity. 42
- Lin Moyin's mother — Deceased; the Golden Lock was her heirloom and remains Lin's most valued personal memento. 2
Story Role / Major Arcs
Lost Golden Lock and the Locust God Temple
Lin's lost Golden Lock brings Su Mo into contact with the Imperial Guard. After receiving the recovered lock, she investigates the Locust God Temple's dried-corpse case and determines that it resembles historical Heavenly Mother Cult incidents that led to catastrophic locust plagues. 2 15
Testing and Recruiting Su Mo
Still suspicious of Su Mo's motives, Lin summons him and falsely presents his interview as a life-or-death interrogation. When he correctly concludes that she intends to recruit him, she issues him an Imperial Guard Strongman badge and orders him to continue working as a yamen runner until called upon. 28
She subsequently assigns him a mission to assist in apprehending Heavenly Mother Cultists, directing him toward Dragon Gate Cave in Taihe County while warning him not to overestimate his strength. 29
Heavenly Mother Cult Investigation
Lin receives reports of cult activity in Tieshan and Anyang Counties but considers the information suspiciously easy to obtain. She orders covert monitoring and dispatches a subordinate to act according to circumstances rather than personally crossing into another jurisdiction. 42
Later, she visits Su Mo at night to discuss the cult's movements. After his prediction that the City God Temple operation would fail is confirmed, Lin accepts his information that Dragon Gate Cave is the cult's likely hiding place. In exchange, she agrees not to ask how he obtained the information and to keep his involvement secret. 43 44
