Background / History
Luffy is the grandson of Marine Hero Monkey D. Garp and the son of Revolutionary Army leader Monkey D. Dragon. Garp placed him under the care of the mountain bandit Dadan for protection, but still subjected him to harsh physical training and repeatedly tried to make him a Marine. Luffy instead remained committed to piracy. 161 182 183
He grew up alongside Portgas D. Ace and Sabo, whom he considers his brothers. His early encounters with Rodney began when he tried to avenge Ace’s capture; Ace and Garp both recognized that Luffy was not yet strong enough to defeat Rodney. 11 357
After defeating Morik’s five-hundred-ship fleet, Luffy entered the Grand Line with his crew and began gaining notoriety as a rising pirate. 165
Appearance
Luffy is identified by his straw hat, which he wears or carries even while imprisoned in Udon. 344
- Bare-chested while held in Udon Prison, with his straw hat hanging from his back. 344
- In Second Gear, his skin turns pink and emits heat and steam. 356
- In Gear Fourth: Boundman, his body expands, his limbs are coated in Armament Haki, and steam surrounds him. 358
Personality
Luffy is intensely stubborn and single-minded. Once he decides to act—whether challenging Rodney, becoming Pirate King, or refusing temporary affiliation with another crew—he does not back down even when his allies warn him that he is badly outmatched. 11 274 445
He equates becoming Pirate King with attaining the greatest freedom on the sea. Adventure and food are central to his outlook; he finds overly safe travel boring and initially dislikes the idea of stopping to train. 184 228 445
His recklessness is balanced by fierce devotion to his brothers and crewmates. He invades Marineford to save Ace despite Ace’s insistence that he leave, and he enters the Dressrosa arena solely because Nami wants the prize Devil Fruit. 201 247
Abilities & Skills
Gum-Gum Fruit
Luffy’s Devil Fruit gives him a rubber body capable of stretching and absorbing ordinary blunt-force impacts.
- Uses stretching attacks including Gomu Gomu no Gatling and Gomu Gomu no Axe. 175
- Ordinary punches and kicks are ineffective against him without Haki. 12
- Sharp weapons can injure him, and Haki-infused attacks bypass his usual blunt-force resistance. 175 201
Fire Style Ninjutsu
During his spar with Rodney, Luffy forms hand seals and uses Fire Style techniques.
Armament Haki
Luffy can harden parts of his body with Armament Haki.
- Coats his fists black while attacking Rodney in Second Gear. 356
- Uses Armament Haki across his limbs in Gear Fourth: Boundman. 358
Gear Second
Luffy accelerates his blood flow through his rubber body, dramatically increasing his physical output.
- Produces heat, steam, and a pinkened body. 356
- Raises his movement speed and attack strength, though the strain would be intolerable for an ordinary body. 356
- Uses the form at Marineford to break through to Ace’s execution platform. 204
Gear Fourth: Boundman
Boundman is Luffy’s stated strongest form during his training with Rodney.
- Inflates his body and continuously bounces due to his elasticity. 358
- Improves power, speed, defense, and aerial mobility beyond Second Gear. 358
- Can redirect attacks in midair by compressing and expelling air from his body. 358
- Rodney’s Hasshoken shockwave can still damage him internally by bypassing his surface hardening. 358
Physical Resilience
Luffy possesses exceptional endurance and recovery.
- Remains able to fight after repeated defeats and severe punishment from Rodney. 12 446
- The bumps Rodney gives him during their training disappear almost immediately. 356
- Reaches his physical limit during the Marineford escape and must rely on Ace’s help. 206
