Background

Yun Shan became leader of the declining Misty Cloud Sect after his master’s death. He viewed restoring the sect’s former glory—especially its return to the Central Continent—as his lifelong ambition. Unable to break through on his own, he began dealing with Vulture Protector of the Hall of Souls and considered relying on the organization’s dangerous pills. 1 109

As a youth, Yun Shan received guidance from Yun Potian, whom he regarded as his grand-ancestor. Yun Potian’s later dream-message rebuked Yun Shan for associating with the Hall of Souls and told him that the Misty Cloud Sect had once ruled the continent under its female Dou God founder. Yun Shan accepted the message as genuine after discovering a matching stone slab upon waking. 1

Appearance

Yun Shan is an elderly man with a long beard and, initially, white hair. After cultivating the Eternal Sacred Body Art, half of his hair turned black, indicating signs of rejuvenation. 1 120

Yun Shan is an ambitious and politically shrewd leader whose foremost concern is the Misty Cloud Sect’s revival. He is willing to take grave risks for that goal, including associating with the Hall of Souls, though he hesitates when confronted with the organization’s reputation and the potential cost of its help. 1 109

He is deeply reverent toward figures he believes represent the sect’s ancient lineage. This reverence makes him exceptionally receptive to Ye Qianqian’s claims and later to Nalan Yan Ran’s supposed identity as the reincarnated Ancestral Grandmother. 2 110 120

Despite his opportunism and occasional arrogance, Yun Shan can prioritize unity over personal authority. After several factions joined the Misty Cloud Sect, he proposed that elders from each faction elect the Sect Master every two years rather than keeping power for himself. 32

Return of the “Ancestral Grandmother”

After Yun Potian’s message, Yun Shan prepared the Misty Cloud Sect for the arrival of its alleged ancient founder. He ignored Jia Ma Qing’s attempt to visit, ordered the sect to perform a ceremonial song and dance, and publicly acknowledged Ye Qianqian as the Ancestral Grandmother after her dramatic arrival. 1 2

Ye Qianqian then exposed Yun Shan’s false Dou Ancestor realm and his Hall of Souls connection. Terrified, Yun Shan submitted completely and became one of her most reliable supporters. 2

Expansion into Neighboring Powers

Emboldened by Ye Qianqian’s apparent backing, Yun Shan led Misty Cloud Sect forces to the Ten Thousand Scorpion Gate and openly threatened its destruction. His confidence faltered when Xie Biyan attacked Ye Qianqian without immediate retaliation, but Saber’s intervention restored his faith. 8 10

After eating the so-called Eternal Evergreen Tree bark, Yun Shan advanced to Three-Star Dou Ancestor and argued with Xie Biyan over control of the tree. 10

Wars and Sect Consolidation

Yun Shan participated in the conflict against Mu Lan and Yan Luo, but was heavily injured while attempting to stop Mo Youyou’s Xuanyuan Sword. Ye Qianqian arrived in time to save him. 16

He later joined Ye Qianqian in rescuing Murong Wan and Mo Youyou from Mo Tianming, personally killing Mo Tianming afterward. 19

Yun Shan accompanied other Misty Cloud Sect experts to Jia Nan Academy. When Xiao Yan attempted to rescue Ye Qianqian, Yun Shan attacked him, only for Yun Yun and several others to intervene. 75 77

Mang Tianchi humiliated Yun Shan twice, striking him through spatial control and forcing the Misty Cloud Sect group to leave the academy. 76

Nalan Yan Ran’s Protector

After encountering Yun Potian’s Soul Imprint again, Yun Shan was told that Nalan Yan Ran was the reincarnation of the Misty Cloud Sect’s Ancestral Grandmother. He was entrusted with protecting her until her memories awakened and appointed her the sect’s First Grand Elder. 110
