Bai Shaoyou operates from the Five Qi Pavilion in Lesser Yingzhou, where he is meant to familiarize himself with South Coast trade routes and people. He finds account books and invoices tedious, preferring ancient records, strange tales, and the prospect of discovering an Immortal Dynasty inheritance. To attract worthwhile storytellers without being overwhelmed by opportunists, he has Shopkeeper Zhou spread rumors that he pays to hear stories. 20

He meets Chen Qing after hearing that Chen possesses information on the Primordial Immortal Dynasty. Bai Shaoyou immediately offers Spirit Marrow for details, then becomes engrossed by Chen Qing's account of Chen Xu. He recognizes that several elements align with his family’s ancient texts, particularly after Chen Qing mentions Princess Xiyao. 20

His family records include references to a Qingqiu-blooded Heavenly Fox named Xiyao, said to have repeatedly broken seals before being suppressed through “Five Dragons Dismemberment.” Bai Shaoyou also knows that the Bai family treasury contains an unidentified relic connected to this Heavenly Fox. 20

This interest can override his usual composure: Chen Qing’s claim that Chen Xu was the Hidden Star Gate’s patriarch visibly excites him, and incomplete accounts of the ancestor’s later life leave him restless. 32 33
