Background / History

Rukia originated in Inudari, Sector 78 of South Rukongai. Her older sister, Hisana, was forced to abandon her there because she could not raise her in Rukongai; Hisana continued searching for her until her death. Byakuya Kuchiki later adopted Rukia into the Kuchiki Family, making her his adoptive younger sister. 142 214

She grew up alongside Renji Abarai in South Rukongai, though the two lost contact for years after her adoption by the Kuchiki Family. 72 She eventually entered the Shino Academy and became a Shinigami, joining the Thirteenth Division under Jūshirō Ukitake. 143 145

Long before her later Hollowfication crisis, the Hōgyoku had been implanted in Rukia's body. A White Hollow was attracted to it and fused with her, producing a second personality rather than immediately consuming her soul. 54 86
