Background / History

Fifth Division and Hueco Mundo

Aizen initially regarded Gaoyu as beneath his notice, but Gaoyu's defeat of the experimental Hollow Metastacia made him take an interest and appoint Gaoyu as the Fifth Division's Ninth Seat 16. Aizen later infiltrated events under Toru Tanimoto's identity, using Kyōka Suigetsu to conceal himself until Gaoyu exposed him in Hueco Mundo 20.

He tested Gaoyu's knowledge of his ambitions, including the Hōgyoku and his dissatisfaction with the Soul King's rule. After deciding that Gaoyu was an intriguing variable rather than a threat, Aizen invited him to become his Fifth Division Vice-Captain 21 22.

Aizen maintained a secret Seireitei laboratory, where he continued Hollow experimentation. He produced a second, entirely black White Hollow and intended to send it hunting in Hueco Mundo 59. He also cultivated Las Noches as an Arrancar power base, ultimately establishing the Espada with Starrk as the 0th Espada and Barragan as the 1st 113.

Manipulation of the Three Realms

Aizen used impersonation, imaginary bodies, Arrancar activity, and false-flag operations to divide the Gotei 13, the Visored, and Kisuke Urahara's allies 96 117 121. He positioned loyal personnel in key Gotei 13 divisions, viewing Tōshirō Hitsugaya's transfer as a means of extending his control over the Thirteenth Division 76.

He secretly investigated Quincy research, particularly the Wandenreich's “Brain in a Vat” project, and formed an alliance with Gremmy Thoumeaux 129 130. His own split Quincy counterpart, Eihwaz, was placed within the Wandenreich as an infiltrator 172 177.

Aizen murdered the Central 46 to force the Gotei 13 into a decisive conflict and create the pressure needed to fully restructure his Soul through Hōgyoku evolution 194. His ambitions expanded after learning more about Gaoyu and the Hollow King: liberating the Soul King became only the first step toward remaking the world on his own terms 194.

Karakura Town Battle and Rebirth

During the battle in Karakura Town, Aizen fused three Hōgyoku and used Yamamoto's Hollowfied flames to refine his Soul. He absorbed Yamamoto, later absorbed Isshin Kurosaki, and became an increasingly unstable Hōgyoku-evolved being 256 257 260.

Ichigo Kurosaki ultimately extracted Yamamoto, Isshin, and the Hōgyoku from Aizen's Soul, stripping away the support for his strongest form 262. Though Kuro restored Aizen with her Soul fragments, Angra Mainyu purified him after Aizen destroyed Angra's demonic arm with Goryū Tenmetsu; Aizen's Sacred Point emerged, confirming his death 263.

Aizen had prepared for this outcome. He turned his Soul into a seed inside Kuro, allowing her to gestate a new body for him. He later reappeared as an infant with a Transcendent-level Soul and greater potential than before 265.

Soul King Candidate

After his rebirth, Aizen sought a method to artificially synthesize Soul King power without provoking another conflict with Ichigo. He developed a process to create an artificial Heavy Spirit Land, then used it and one hundred thousand monster Souls to forge a King Key 321 328.

Using the King Key over his heart, Aizen merged the synthesized Soul King power with his transforming Spiritual Power and became a god 328. He subsequently conceived a larger project: divide and reconstruct his Soul, will, and power into five complementary authorities in pursuit of genuine omniscience and omnipotence 341 342.

Appearance

Aizen is first shown wearing glasses and maintaining a calm, scholarly appearance even after his disguise is exposed 20. His Hōgyoku evolution progressively changes him into a far more inhuman form.

• A Hollow-like void appears in his chest, housing the Hōgyoku amid constantly refining flames 256.
• A white shell covers his body during later evolution; after shedding it, his hair grows longer, his sclera turn black, and his pupils turn red 258.

Personality

Aizen is calculating, patient, and intensely purpose-driven. He uses people, institutions, and conflicts as components of larger experiments, showing little attachment to the lives of subordinates or enemies when they cease to be useful 20 121.

His defining trait is an aversion to being controlled. This trait was so central to his nature that the opposite self created from him, Eihwaz, was predisposed to welcome control and obedience 172. His long-term objective is therefore not merely power, but freedom from all higher authority and the ability to reconstruct the world according to his own will 194.

Despite this detachment, Aizen can be gentle with Momo Hinamori and recognizes exceptional intellect in Kisuke Urahara 92 165. His defeat by Ichigo exposed a rare loss of composure: he was enraged that centuries of planning could be overturned by a human opponent 262.
