Background / History
The Death Eaters are Voldemort's followers and the principal force behind his campaign to dominate the British wizarding world. Their ideology is rooted in Pureblood supremacy: members such as Adolf Shafik regard non-Pureblood beings as inherently inferior, while many later recruits are Dark wizards drawn by Voldemort's strength, violence, and promises of power. 448 597
At the Quidditch World Cup, masked Death Eaters march through the campsite, burn tents, and torment the Roberts family for amusement. Their victims—including infants—are levitated and grotesquely manipulated above the crowd. Linley and Irina intervene, killing numerous marchers and exposing the group's vulnerability to Mana Suppression Power and Irina's Ice Crystal Spear. 277 278 279
Barty Crouch Jr. later breaks into Azkaban and frees more than thirty imprisoned Death Eaters, including Bellatrix Lestrange, Antonin Dolohov, and Augustus Rookwood. The breakout restores Voldemort's veteran followers and enables the faction's rapid return to open conflict. 335 336
Following their defeats at Little Hangleton and the Department of Mysteries, the group suffers heavy losses but continues expanding through new Dark wizard recruits. Voldemort maintains control through the Dark Mark, Legilimency, executions, and torture; when doubts spread after his defeat, he kills nearly fifty disloyal followers and tortures many more with the Cruciatus Curse. 378 595 601 602
Barty Crouch Sr.'s Ministry administration makes Death Eater membership punishable by death, purges infiltrators from the Ministry, and severely constrains domestic recruitment. Voldemort responds by ordering McNair to recruit followers across Europe, eventually swelling his forces beyond 3,500 Dark wizards before the final battle. 605 639 713 722
Appearance
Death Eaters typically conceal their identities beneath black robes, hoods, and silver masks. Their masks and attire serve both intimidation and anonymity during marches, raids, and battlefield operations. 277 548 725
- Silver masks — Exclusive identifying attire worn during operations. 548 725
- Black robes and hoods — Standard clothing associated with the faction's public image. 590 725
- Dark Mark — The symbol of Voldemort and his faction; many formal members bear it on their arms, though some newer recruits remain unbranded. 503 601
- Black-smoke movement magic — Used by Death Eaters for rapid travel and retreats. 595 669
Organization and Ideology
The faction contains both veteran Death Eaters from Voldemort's first rise and large numbers of newer recruits. Veteran members include Bellatrix Lestrange, Rodolphus Lestrange, Rabastan Lestrange, Augustus Rookwood, Avery, Mulciber, McNair, and Yaxley; newcomers often lack their combat skill and commitment. 371 585 601
Membership is not motivated by a single belief.
- Pureblood supremacists — Support Voldemort as the strongest available champion of Pureblood rule. 448 640
- Dark wizards and killers — Join for violence, status, or the chance to operate without fear of normal law. 597 713
- Opportunists — Some followers attempt to distance themselves from Voldemort once his defeats make the faction dangerous; Lucius Malfoy ultimately turns against him. 378 448 669
- Fear-bound servants — Voldemort's Legilimency, Killing Curses, and Cruciatus torture make open disloyalty fatal. 601 602

Abilities & Skills
Dark Arts and Unforgivable Curses
Death Eaters routinely employ lethal Dark magic. The Killing Curse is their most common battlefield weapon, supplemented by torture, explosive spells, and other offensive curses. 277 526 719 726
- Use coordinated Avada Kedavra volleys to trap targets and block escape routes. 526
- Employ the Cruciatus Curse against enemies and disloyal allies. 601 719
- Use Explosion Charms, Dark Arts, and conventional combat spells in large-scale raids. 669 726
- Most ordinary members are far weaker than elite Aurors; only a small minority can rival elite Auror-level fighters. 378 737
Group Casting and Countermagic
Death Eaters can combine spells effectively when operating in numbers. During the World Cup march, dozens jointly cast Vanishment Charms powerful enough to erase Linley's Fiendfyre. 278
- Create physical shields from rubble to block Killing Curses. 726
- Coordinate ambushes from rooftops, shadows, windows, and other concealed positions. 526
- Use protective estate magic to conceal bases such as Avery Manor. 719
Dark Mark Enhancement
Voldemort can turn the Dark Mark into a battlefield-wide ritual through Blood Sacrifice: Dark Mark. The blood-red mark enhances Death Eaters' bodies and magical power while weakening the Order of the Phoenix, Ministry forces, and D.A. Army. 378 593
- Ordinary members can temporarily surpass elite Auror-level power. 378
- Powerful veterans such as Bellatrix receive a far greater increase. 378
- The enhancement affects the judgment and combat performance of Voldemort's enemies. 593
- The Dark Mark can also exert physical pressure when Voldemort channels power through it. 713
