Background / History
Voldemort previously ruled through terror during a Dark Age in the British wizarding world, commanding Death Eaters and persecuting those he considered inferior. Hendry Rowle infiltrated his ranks for the Order of the Phoenix and became one of Voldemort's right-hand men before Voldemort killed him for concealing information related to a weapon capable of defeating him. Voldemort fell roughly a year after Linley Rowle's birth. 1 80 179
His pursuit of immortality led him to divide his soul into Horcruxes. The known vessels included Tom Riddle's Diary, Slytherin's Locket, Hufflepuff's Cup, Ravenclaw's Diadem, Marvolo Gaunt's Ring, Nagini, and Harry Potter. 489 687 748
After his fall, Voldemort survived by inhabiting Quirrell's body. He punished Quirrell brutally for failure, temporarily took control of his body to heal it, and lost that vessel when Quirrell was killed. 54 75 78
A younger fragment of his soul later emerged from the Diary after draining Ginny Weasley's life force. This semi-corporeal Tom Riddle commanded the Basilisk and attempted to recover the Diary before its destruction. 137 139 489
Appearance
Voldemort's appearance changed dramatically across his fragmented existence and resurrection.
- Diary manifestation — A handsome, black-haired sixteen-year-old in Slytherin robes with a silver prefect badge; his body was semi-transparent, with the Diary visible where his heart should be. 137
- Pre-resurrection form — A grotesque, infant-like creature with blood-red eyes and flattened nostrils. 361 366
- Resurrected body — Tall and skeletal, with pallid skin, red slit-pupilled eyes, a flat snake-like nose, elongated pale fingers, and black robes. 366 590
- Post-battle condition — Sustained severe wounds repeatedly, including being cut in half, pierced through the torso, and nearly destroyed by the Malfoy Manor explosion. 594 601 670
Personality
Voldemort is intensely arrogant and regards himself as an immortal, invincible master. He expects absolute obedience from his followers and answers doubt with Legilimency, torture, and execution. 601 602
He is obsessed with control, personal power, and the conquest of the magical world. His stated goal includes placing wizards above Muggles and expelling half-bloods and Muggle-borns from wizarding society. 640
Repeated defeats and the fragmentation of his soul make him increasingly paranoid, impulsive, and unstable. Rather than acknowledge his own choices, he blames Dumbledore for his transformation into the Dark Lord. 372 601
Abilities & Skills
Horcrux Creation and Soul Survival
Voldemort divided his soul among multiple Horcruxes, allowing him to survive the destruction of his body as long as one vessel remained.
- Created at least seven Horcruxes, including objects, Nagini, and Harry Potter. 489 687 748
- Could possess weakened hosts, including Quirrell, while without a true body. 54 75
- His Diary fragment could drain life force, manifest physically, possess Ginny Weasley, and command the Basilisk. 137 139
- His immortality ended once Linley revealed the destroyed remnants of every Horcrux before him. 720 748
Dark Curses
Voldemort is exceptionally proficient with lethal and torturous Dark Arts.
- Avada Kedavra — Casts ordinary Killing Curses as well as lightning-chain variants that split, track targets, and strike multiple opponents. 371 379 720
- Cruciatus Curse — Uses prolonged torture against followers and enemies alike. 361 602
- Fiendfyre — One of his most proficient spells after the Killing Curse; he can shape it into attacking beasts. 375
- Thousand-Mile Tracking Killing Curse — A tracking curse that forced Dumbledore into evasive combat. 372
- Vanishment Charm — Used at Demon King level to erase Linley's Fiendfyre and temporarily lift an Anti-Apparition restriction. 728
Dark Mark
Voldemort transformed the Dark Mark from a symbol into a weapon and enhancement ritual.
- Blood Sacrifice: Dark Mark — Burns life force to raise his own power and dramatically enhance the magic of nearby Death Eaters. 378 379
- Skeletal Manifestation — Projects the bloody Dark Mark with enough pressure to force Death Eaters to the ground. 713
- The bloody Dark Mark strengthened Voldemort's dark magic and empowered his army during the Battle of Hogwarts. 729
Legilimency
Voldemort is a master Legilimens capable of detecting betrayal within his followers.
- Read Death Eaters' disloyal thoughts during a gathering at Avery Manor. 601
- Executed or killed those he identified as doubtful through mass Legilimency. 601 602
- His mental connection with Harry caused Harry painful visions of Voldemort's actions. 361
Apparition and Black-Smoke Transformation
As a Demon King-level wizard, Voldemort could Apparate with extreme precision even while severely wounded.
- Escaped Linley's spear after being impaled by forcibly Apparating without splinching. 380
- Shifted into black smoke to reduce physical damage and transport selected Death Eaters. 595 742
- Could not escape Linley's Space Lockdown Formation, which prevented his final long-distance Apparition. 747 748
Power of the Stars
Voldemort learned to forcibly plunder stellar power to counter Linley's magic-suppression authority.
- Stripped star power from starlight and suppressed it with his own magic. 667
- The stolen power could not form a Star Origin and diminished permanently with use. 667
- Used the Power of the Stars against Linley during the Battle of Hogwarts. 729

- Personal wand — Described as bone-like during his resurrection. 366

- Horcruxes — Soul vessels used to secure his survival; all were eventually destroyed. 489 748
Relationships

- Death Eaters — His followers and military force; he maintained their obedience through fear, torture, execution, and selective rewards. 601 602

- Irina Lowell — Major adversary whose advancement to Demon King level and ice magic repeatedly endangered Voldemort. 592 742 748

- Nagini — His favored serpent and one of his Horcruxes; formerly a witch afflicted by the Blood Curse. 489
