Peter still remembered how, more than 200 years ago, he had studied High Gothic with his peers at school on Olympia, racked his brains over math problems, and run around playing with the others.

Especially during sports meets, he remembered how much he had liked watching a certain girl in her athletic shorts, and especially her smooth, jade-white thighs peeking out beneath them. Though now, he could no longer understand why he had been so fascinated by such seemingly trivial things.

But having experienced school himself, he had never forgotten the importance of education. Education mattered in many ways: it was not only essential to personal growth and development, but also a key factor in social progress and prosperity.

Education was a continuous process, and investing in it meant investing in the future. But education was also expensive. It produced nothing tangible, created nothing, and yielded nothing that could be eaten or used. It was an investment whose returns took years to materialize.

Most people on this planet didn't understand this idea. The planet's original nobility were better off; although their education might not be the same, they still valued it. But ordinary people and slaves would rather put their children straight to work than waste time and energy on seemingly useless education. After all, the benefits of work were visible and tangible in the short term.

In fact, this was common throughout the Imperium's worlds, in both the underhives and the lower levels. After all, neither repetitive factory work in the lower levels nor gang members in the underhives shooting and stabbing one another required literacy or scientific knowledge.
