Background / History
An Ork pirate fleet entered the Limnos region from the Maelstrom, led by Paul Shakes His Head aboard the flagship Deafening Rock 'n' Roll. The fleet attacked a poorly defended Dark Mechanicus resource-extraction point, seized its mining and refining equipment, and intended to use the site to produce weapons, fuel, and war machines. 74 75 76
The Orks occupied Wandering Planet B-002, where they used abandoned Dark Mechanicus facilities to mine resources, manufacture equipment, and grow additional Boyz. Their expanding population posed a direct threat to the neighboring Limnos System. 78 80
Peter’s decapitation strike killed Paul Shakes His Head aboard the Deafening Rock 'n' Roll. The pirate fleet immediately lost cohesion; most of its vessels were destroyed or fled, while the remaining Orks on B-002 were trapped and later subjected to a prolonged eradication campaign. 85 86 87 194 195
Despite previous purges, Orks later re-emerged on B-002 from surviving spores. Their repeated survival and rebuilding turned the mining world into a training battlefield for the Forged Steel Brethren’s new Tenth Company before a second, seven-month sterilization operation was conducted. 187 190 194 195
Appearance
Orks are powerfully built, green-skinned humanoids with rough skin, heavy frames, sharp fangs, and a strong preference for improvised armour and conspicuous decoration. Their equipment is often welded directly onto their bodies or assembled from scavenged components. 75 82 188
- Common warriors wear battered steel plates and carry choppas, axes, and big shootas. 82
- Their armour and vehicles frequently display crude graffiti, bright colors, spikes, trophies, and black-and-white checkerboard patterns. 74 82 90
- Larger leaders may wear heavy adamantium-and-plasteel armour and wield oversized weapons such as Power Klaws, chain axes, or battle axes. 75 84 192
- Some Orks ride red Combat Bikes or modified trucks; others pilot scrap-built fighters, helicopters, and Death Helicopters. 87 90 189 190
Society and Culture
Battle and Hierarchy
Ork society reveres strength, personal combat, and aggressive leadership. Orks instinctively charge when challenged or attacked, and their leaders establish authority through size, brutality, and battlefield success. 75 190 193
- Ork Boyz follow powerful bosses into battle and willingly form living shields around them. 83 193
- A boss’s death can rapidly trigger panic, scattering, or disorganized fighting among nearby Orks. 86 194
- Individual challenges are culturally meaningful: Paul Shakes His Head accepted Peter’s duel, and another warlord answered Randolph’s challenge. 84 85 325
- Orks may continue attacking despite catastrophic losses, trampling over their own dead as they press toward enemy lines. 75 191 192
Music and Celebration
For the pirate fleet led by Paul Shakes His Head, music and warfare were inseparable. The flagship’s bridge functioned as a concert hall, complete with a stage, speakers, light rigs, war imagery, musicians, drinking, dancing, and brawling. 74
- Orks drink Fungus Beer, celebrate through brawls, and sing war songs during preparations for battle. 74
- Paul’s Guitar Battle Axe combined a battle axe, guitar-like metal strings, and a hidden bolter pistol. 74 76
- Their most prominent battle cry is “Waaaaaaaaaagh!!!” 74 75
Written Communication
Orks primarily use spoken commands, gestures, observation, and crude Orkglyphs rather than a systematic written language. Their markings commonly serve as intimidation tags, signs, or decoration. 358
A captured Ork military treatise titled My Great waaaaaagh shows that some warlords can record rudimentary tactical ideas in High Gothic, including encirclement, frontal assault, lightning strikes, and aerial bombardment. 358
Abilities & Traits
Mushroom-Based Reproduction
Orks reproduce by being grown rather than through ordinary biological reproduction. Their spores can persist after an apparent purge, allowing Ork populations to return years later if corpses and contaminated areas are not completely destroyed. 78 187 194
- An Ork Boy was observed emerging from beneath a giant mushroom, covered in slime. 188
- Mushroom fields provide food and ingredients for Fungus Beer. 188
- Surviving Orks can rebuild settlements after suppression campaigns, becoming the leaders of later generations. 187
- Complete incineration of Ork bodies is treated as necessary to prevent future resurgence. 194
Psychic WAAAGH! Connection
Ork Boyz share a poorly understood psychic connection with their Warboss during a WAAAGH!. A leader’s battle fervor strengthens the horde’s fearlessness, while the leader’s death can cause immediate disorder even among Orks without conventional communication. 86
- An Ork Weirdboy can generate a psionic shield around a boss. 84
- Killing Paul Shakes His Head caused his fleet to hesitate, flee, or collapse into chaos. 85 86
- The deaths of Gruggr ’Da Klaw and an Ork warlord likewise caused their forces to scatter or lose cohesion. 193 194 325
Strength and Resilience
Orks are physically formidable close-combat opponents, capable of overwhelming mortal troops through strength, aggression, and numbers. 75 191 192
- Ork weapons can include massive axes, hammers, choppas, chain axes, Power Klaws, and crude blades. 82 192 325
- Larger bosses can endure sustained bolter fire; Gruggr ’Da Klaw’s armour suffered only shallow dents under an initial barrage. 193
- Orks have used Tankbusta attacks against armored vehicles, sacrificing themselves to destroy enemy armour. 90
- Their most powerful leaders frequently force decisive close-quarters confrontations with enemy commanders. 76 85 91 193 325
Technology and Warfare
Improvised Engineering
Ork technology is visibly crude, but it remains dangerous and functional. Their ships, vehicles, weapons, and fortifications are assembled from scrap metal, wreckage, scavenged machinery, and mismatched parts. 74 78 87
- Ork warships are built from space debris, asteroids, wreckage, irregular gun emplacements, and plasma-driven engine pipes. 74
- A hull breach on the Deafening Rock ’n’ Roll was repaired with rusted iron plates by a Big Mek and Mekboy without void suits. 74
- Ork fighters are rough scrap constructions but can be durable and maneuverable in combat. 87 90
- Their occupied fortresses can incorporate advanced equipment, including large field generators capable of blocking artillery fire. 190
Swarm Assaults
Orks favor direct, high-casualty assaults that rely on numerical pressure, massed vehicles, and the momentum of a charging green tide. 75 190 191
- Ork Boyz rush enemy positions on foot, in trucks, on motorcycles, and in improvised armored vehicles. 87 90 190
- They deploy specialized units and machines such as Mekboys, Weirdboys, Tankbusta Boyz, Murder Cans, Dakka Fighters, Death Helicopters, and Great Gargants. 83 84 90 91 190 325
- Their assaults are vulnerable to prepared defenses, artillery traps, concentrated firepower, and decapitation strikes against their leaders. 86 192 193
- Ork warships and settlements are difficult to interpret through human logic; weapons, communications systems, and ship layouts are often chaotic and disordered. 81 82 83
