Chapter 10: Promoted to Corporal
"The objective of this counterattack operation is to concentrate our forces and destroy the German Army's five encampments in one fell swoop. The coded messages from the map indicate that one is a large operational base, three are medium-sized encampments, and one is a smaller transit station camp."
Colonel Marcos began his explanation, and every officer in the command tent listened intently, clearly having waited a long time for the opportunity of a counterattack.
Being passively suppressed by the German Army, the front-line defense zones would inevitably fall completely sooner or later. However, if this counterattack operation was successful, it could blunt the sharp edge of the German Nazis' morale.
"For the enemy's large operational base, I plan to personally lead five or more units with two Lieutenant Colonels to launch a surprise attack. The three medium-sized encampments will each be led by officers with the rank of Second Lieutenant or higher, leading three units."
Colonel Marcos spoke while gesturing with his finger on a large map. The map was a specialized military-grade 3D simulation map, clearly showing the five German camp fortresses marked outside the defensive line.
"It seems like we're really going all out this time. The operation commander is personally leading the charge, we have intelligence on the enemy's base coordinates, a sufficiently ample troop arrangement, and a night raid—it's hard to lose this operation."
Kyle thought to himself. He was solely responsible for deciphering the coded messages and was already well aware of the intelligence information recorded on the map. Upon hearing the Colonel's troop deployment plan for the surprise attack, he knew this war was basically a sure thing.
This was the importance of intelligence in war; the winners were always the ones who had the advantage.
In the following time, Colonel Marcos distributed the troops each officer was responsible for and the surprise attack plan one by one. After learning their tasks for the night, the officers quickly left the tent with small copies of the operational plan briefs to begin preparations for the surprise attack.
Soon, only Kyle remained in the command tent.
Did the commander forget about me?
Kyle grumbled inwardly, looking at Colonel Marcos who had sat back down in his chair. However, he didn't waste time. During the planning meeting, he had managed to extract several decent Green Ability Cards from the officers around him.
Although, once the Green Ability Cards accumulated to a certain extent, stacking similar specialized ability cards would no longer provide significant improvements to physical fitness and abilities.
Colonel Marcos took a sip of water, and his gaze finally shifted to Kyle. The tension on his face eased considerably, and he smiled, saying, "Soldier Kyle. Tonight's surprise attack plan is very important. Although you just returned from the front-line combat zone this morning, you will still participate in the surprise attack plan tonight after resting this afternoon."
"Of course. To be able to participate in the first counterattack against the Nazis is an honor for me as an American soldier. I will definitely fight with all my might tonight." Kyle said righteously.
"I have heard from many Sergeants about your will and drive as a soldier, as well as your astonishing performance on the battlefield these past few days." Colonel Marcos nodded with satisfaction. He was truly pleased with this new soldier, finding him more and more agreeable the more he looked at him.
When a new recruit goes to the battlefield, it's already very good to expect them to perform at seventy percent of their normal strength. But the newly arrived Kyle performed like a battle-hardened veteran, thriving on the battlefield.
In addition to arranging the counterattack plan these past few days, Colonel Marcos had also repeatedly confirmed Kyle's identity with the rear base, fearing that he might be a secret spy disguised by the German Army.
Colonel Marcos cleared his throat and said meaningfully, "However, tonight, I'm not just asking you to participate in the surprise attack as a soldier."
"Not as a soldier? Then what..." Kyle was surprised. Suddenly guessing something, his expression turned strange as he said, "Colonel, you're not going to have me lead troops to attack the fifth German small transit station camp tonight, are you?"
"That's right." Colonel Marcos nodded, indicating he wasn't joking. He took a military rank insignia from the drawer and placed it on the table, specifically saying, "Of course. You won't be leading as a soldier, but as a 'Corporal'."
"Me, a Corporal?" Kyle stared, pointing at his own nose in disbelief.
Although the rank of Corporal was not high, in the army, it could definitely be considered entering the 'non-commissioned officer' level!
Three days of combat, directly skipping the ranks of Private, Private First Class, and Specialist, to become a Corporal? Since when did the position of a Corporal become so cheap?
"What, you don't believe in your own abilities?" Colonel Marcos chuckled.
"I naturally believe I have the ability. But I really didn't expect to be directly promoted to Corporal, Soldier." Kyle shrugged, quickly calming his emotions.
"In peacetime, being promoted from a new recruit to a Corporal in three days is something even someone with a General as a backer couldn't achieve."
Colonel Marcos said solemnly, "But this is the era of World War! Soldier Kyle, the battles you've experienced and the enemies you've personally killed these past few days have likely outnumbered what those who lived in peacetime veterans have killed in over a decade, by several times."
"Outstanding individual combat performance, superior and unique intelligence analysis capabilities, it's too much of a waste for someone like you to only be a soldier. Since you have the ability, and the army desperately needs elite talents like you, with the accumulation of actual military merits as a foundation, what's the big deal about being directly promoted to Corporal?"
"I understand." Kyle nodded.
Chaos breeds heroes. It is precisely because of the turmoil of World War II that capable individuals can disregard backing and experience accumulation and rapidly advance in rank.
In such times, I like it.
Kyle's lips curled slightly, his blue eyes filled with confidence. For the first time, he felt fortunate to have been reborn into the World War II era in the Marvel universe.
Colonel Marcos smiled and said, "Don't worry, you'll be leading troops for the first time, and it's such an important counterattack campaign. I won't let you command alone."
"That's good. I was afraid I'd mess it up by myself." Kyle breathed a sigh of relief. He now clearly understood that while the Colonel was executing the counterattack, he was also giving him an opportunity to train.
Colonel Marcos called out towards the outside of the tent, "Communicator, go call Sergeant Fury over."
"Sergeant Fury?" Kyle rubbed his chin. The name sounded a bit familiar.
However, a moment later, a Black officer walked into the tent. His left eye was still bandaged, but he was already wearing a full set of combat uniforms, looking ready for action.
"It's you, Sergeant." Kyle exclaimed in surprise. The person who walked in was none other than the Black Sergeant he had encountered during his first battlefield experience.
"Soldier Kyle, no, I should say Corporal Kyle." Sergeant Fury greeted him warmly, then saluted the Colonel, "Sir! I, Sergeant Fury, have recovered and rejoined the unit and can execute all operational plans!"
"Very good." Colonel Marcos nodded and introduced Kyle, "This is your team leader partner for tonight, Nick Fury. He has been commanding as a Sergeant for some time and has rich field command experience."
Kyle blinked. Hearing the Black officer's name, he was instantly stunned.
Nick Fury? Hmm, the new Director of S.H.I.E.L.D. after the 21st century?
"Please take care of me tonight." Sergeant Fury said with a pleasant expression, nodding at Kyle. He didn't have the fierce, domineering aura he would later possess, but he looked very young now, around twenty-five years old.
"You're too kind." Kyle calmed his emotions. It was World War II now; let alone the Director of S.H.I.E.L.D., even S.H.I.E.L.D. hadn't been established yet.
But fighting alongside the future Director of S.H.I.E.L.D.?
This was rather interesting.
Fury's age is correct. Later, he lived by taking the 'Infinite Equation' serum. Please check Baidu for details.
