As soon as they heard there would be no morning run, all the new recruits felt immensely grateful.

Every recruit silently repeated the words to himself.
They only stood at attention for a little over ten minutes, practiced turning in place and the at-ease and attention positions, then quickly dismissed and went back to clean their respective areas.
Since they weren't having breakfast, they had plenty of time to tidy up their barracks.
"Duty officer, have these recruits get their barracks in order. After they come back from their physicals this morning, we'll hold a barracks and hygiene inspection. Get those rotating red banners in the equipment room hung up."
"These recruits are making painfully slow progress. Their blankets are a complete mess. It's time to turn up the pressure."
Company commander Chen Tianjian called the duty officer to Company Headquarters and gave him a thorough talking-to.

The duty officer nodded, took his whistle, and headed toward the front of the building.
"Huh? Why are they suddenly inspecting our barracks?"
The recruits looked a little flustered. Most of them hadn't pressed their blankets firm yet, and they usually dawdled through their allotted time for making their beds in the morning.
The blankets they'd folded couldn't even be called bad. One more look at them and you'd think they were about to explode.
