Background / History

Poison Cultivation and Independence

Dugu Bo cultivated Poison Arts for decades, evolving his Azure Phosphorus Snake into its Emperor form. His strength came with severe toxin backlash: according to Yu Mingfei, the pain he endured day and night was far worse than Dugu Yan’s. His accumulated poison was potent enough to massacre a city overnight 30.

Although acquainted with Prince Xue Xing, he resisted becoming dependent on the Heaven Dou royal family or major sects. He feared that seeking a royal soul bone would oblige both him and his granddaughter to serve the imperial family. Dugu Yan likewise rejected Yu Tianheng’s proposed soul-bone marriage arrangement because she knew her grandfather disliked involvement with sect forces 17.

He possessed the Ice and Fire Yin Yang Well and cultivated medicinal fields around it, but did not understand most of its immortal herbs. A painful encounter with the herbs in his younger years left him unwilling to consume them 31 91.

Dugu Yan’s Poison Crisis

Yu Mingfei originally supplied a method for containing Dugu Yan’s toxins in a soul bone through the Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon Sect. The sect presented Yu Tianheng as its source, then blamed Yu Mingfei when the treatment failed. Dugu Bo confronted the sect, seized an elder by the throat, and threatened to poison all eighteen hundred members of the Yu family unless they explained themselves 1.

Dugu Yan had absorbed an approximately twelve-hundred-year Azure Phosphorus Snake left leg bone purchased at auction. Yu Mingfei later discovered that its energy had already been depleted; the apparent abundance of Soul Power came from its previous owner. Dugu Bo had failed to identify the defect before the bone was used to contain her poison 17.

While searching for a remedy, Dugu Bo borrowed the Nine-Petal Golden Orchid from Xue Qinghe. He also joined Chen Xin, Dugu Yan, and Ye Lingling on a search for rare treasures in the Star Dou Great Forest. There, he captured Yu Mingfei and brought him to his granddaughter, initially more to let her vent her anger than because he trusted Yu Mingfei’s ability to cure her 16 17 50.

Yu Mingfei removed Dugu Yan’s uncontrolled toxins, but her martial soul remained damaged. Dugu Bo then attempted to seize what he believed was Yu Mingfei’s torso soul bone, despite having just offered him protection from the Yu family. Yu Mingfei escaped by taking Dugu Yan hostage and throwing her back toward her grandfather during a beast tide 19 20 21.

Alliance with Yu Mingfei

When Ye Lingling brought Yu Mingfei to the Ice and Fire Yin Yang Well, Dugu Bo again tried to demand his soul bone. He relented after learning that Dugu Yan liked Yu Mingfei 29.

As her condition worsened, Dugu Bo offered anything for her survival, including service to Yu Mingfei and revenge against the Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon Sect. Yu Mingfei removed and repaired her poisoned leg bone, reattached her severed leg, and arranged further treatment with immortal herbs and the divine spring 30 31 34.

Afterward, Dugu Bo bowed his head in thanks and pledged to support whatever Yu Mingfei wished to do. He gave Yu Mingfei access to the well’s treasures, obtained Fire Tunic Jade Clothes for him, and researched suitable ice- and water-attribute soul beasts for his third soul ring 31 41 45 47.

Yu Mingfei’s Disappearance

Dugu Bo distrusted Chen Xin’s ability to protect Yu Mingfei during their next soul hunt. His fears appeared justified when the Dark Demon Evil God Tiger’s attack led to Yu Mingfei being swallowed by a spatial rift 54 57.

Enraged, Dugu Bo attacked Chen Xin with Dust of Jade, severely injuring him while deliberately stopping short of killing him. He also planted Jade Blood Poison in Chen Xin’s body, condemning him to daily agony. Despite his anger, Dugu Bo insisted that Yu Mingfei would return 57 58.

After receiving Yu Mingfei’s letter, he hurried to Sea God Island with Dugu Yan and Ye Lingling. Before leaving, he formally withdrew both girls from Heaven Dou Royal Academy and collected the immortal and poisonous herbs near the well 87 91 94.

Sea God Island

On arrival, Dugu Bo defeated Sea Horse Douluo in a spar by disguising the nature of his eighth Soul Skill and following it with Medusa’s Gaze. He avoided lethal attacks and large-scale contamination because Yu Mingfei had made clear that Sea God Island was not an enemy 87 88.

He declared that he wanted to join the island and consequently received its assessment for incoming Land Soul Masters. Bo Saixi noted that previous visiting Titled Douluo had been treated as guests; Dugu Bo was the first to receive a Sea God Trial for entry 92.

He subsequently scouted nearby waters, helped secure Dugu Yan’s ten-thousand-year fourth soul ring, and collected Evil Spirit Orca corpses for his assessment. He also cooperated with Yu Mingfei’s expanding orca force and prepared to restrain the Evil Orca King before its final defeat 113 115 122 133 135.

Appearance

  • Elderly, green-haired man with a beard 17 31 34.
  • Martial Soul Avatar: An enormous Jade Phosphorous Serpent Emperor, considerably larger than Sea Horse Douluo’s three-meter seahorse avatar 87.
  • Avatar’s poison manifestation: An emerald pearl floats above its head, surrounded by dense, revolving azure poisonous miasma 87.
  • Medusa’s Gaze: The avatar’s eyes turn white before releasing two cold white beams 88.

Personality

Dugu Bo’s devotion to Dugu Yan outweighs his promises and concern for others. Calling her his only remaining family, he is willing to threaten entire institutions or kill Yu Mingfei for a soul bone if he believes it will save her. Her near-death experience eventually makes him reluctant to let her continue his poison-cultivation path 21 34.

His gratitude produces an equally dramatic change. Once Yu Mingfei saves Dugu Yan, Dugu Bo abandons his Titled Douluo airs, accepts instructions, runs errands, and worries about Yu Mingfei’s safety. By Sea God Island, he openly trusts Yu Mingfei to protect both Dugu Yan and Ye Lingling 31 34 41 91.

He is proud, vindictive, and fond of exploiting an opponent’s assumptions. He enjoys Chen Xin’s distress during their encounter at the valley and wins against Sea Horse Douluo through misleading warnings rather than brute force. Nevertheless, he can exercise restraint: he spares Chen Xin and carefully limits his attacks on Sea God Island 48 58 87 88.

Abilities & Skills

Poison Arts

  • Mass destruction: His fully unleashed Poison Arts exceed most Titled Douluo in killing power and destructive range, despite his comparatively weak frontal combat ability 122.
  • Medicinal integration: Azure Phosphorus Snake martial souls can incorporate the properties of external medicines into their Soul Skills 34 57.
  • Jade Blood Poison: Inflicts the daily agony of “Ten Thousand Poisons Devouring Body,” as demonstrated on Chen Xin 58.
  • Toxicological expertise: After decades of consuming poisonous substances, he claims to identify edible and inedible poisonous creatures by sight and smell 113.
  • Limitations: Unidentified poisons still warrant caution. He retreats with Dugu Yan and Ye Lingling rather than test Yu Mingfei’s unknown airborne poison on them 22.

Toxic Pill Pearl

  • Function: Serves as the core of his Soul Power circulation and contains the essence of his accumulated toxins 50.
  • Soul Core comparison: Yu Mingfei identifies it as effectively a Soul Core with an additional poison-storage function 50.
  • Drawback: Its mixed functions contribute to Dugu Bo being weaker than other Titled Douluo in ordinary combat 50.

Eighth Soul Skill: Time Freeze

  • Effect: Brings everything within its range to a standstill; it is a control skill, not a poisonous attack 88.
  • Applications: Immobilizes the Thorn Tail Fish for Dugu Yan’s soul-ring hunt and restrains powerful Evil Spirit Orcas 115 133.
  • Cost: Consumes substantial energy. Repeated use requires recovery before further deployment 133 135.
  • Deception: Its seven-colored radiance allows Dugu Bo to exploit opponents who assume all his major skills contain poison 87 88.

Ninth Soul Skill: Dust of Jade

  • Effect: Converts all the poison within his body into invisible, formless emerald radiance. Earth, vegetation, animals, and soul beasts struck by it melt and return to dust 57 58.
  • Lethality: Can kill even a Titled Douluo without appropriate defensive, poison-resistant, or detoxifying skills 57.
  • Environmental aftermath: Leaves contaminated dead zones that may take years or decades to recover 58.
  • Cost: Empties his pill pearl of power; recovery normally takes at least a month 57.
  • Previous use: Before attacking Chen Xin, he had used the refined technique once to slaughter an entire Soul Hunting Forest 57.

Soul Bone Skill: Medusa’s Gaze

  • Effect: Petrifies solid targets, including energy 88.
  • Source: His Medusa head soul bone 133.
  • Application: Pierces through Time Freeze and Sea Horse Douluo’s opposing attack, securing victory without killing him 88.

Medicines and Poison Formations

  • Protective poison pills: Neutralize the divine springs’ ambient influence at a safe distance, allowing Dugu Yan and Ye Lingling to remain near the well. They do not make approaching the springs safe 32 33 42.
  • Valley defenses: Maintains a poison barrier around the Ice and Fire Yin Yang Well; a medicinal sachet allows passage through it 29.
  • Sea-beast cultivation plan: Proposes using a poison formation to raise Sea Soul Beasts for easier hunting and food collection 113.

Equipment / Items

  • Medusa head soul bone — Provides Medusa’s Gaze 88 133.
  • Toxin-storage soul bone — Holds his accumulated toxins, reducing their adverse effect on his Soul Power 50.
  • Storage Jade Pendant — Used to collect Evil Spirit Orca remains 122.
  • Ruyi Hundred Treasures Pouch — Given to Dugu Yan; can store living things and carries herbs gathered before the journey to Sea God Island 94 122.
