Background

Beerus is Universe 7’s God of Destruction, a divine authority responsible for erasing unqualified planets and dangerously disruptive beings to preserve cosmic balance. He previously neglected these duties while sleeping, eating, and seeking comfort, but undertook an intense six-month destruction campaign after Gran became his successor candidate. Whis interprets this unusual diligence as Beerus’s fear of being erased and leaving Gran to inherit the office’s liabilities. 14 15

Gran’s Ultra Instinct-like aura awakened Beerus from sleep and alarmed him enough to attack its source immediately. Upon learning that Whis had brought the young Saiyan to the God of Destruction Realm, Beerus became astonished by Gran’s King Kai’s Peak Dimension, mental cultivation, and abnormal rate of growth. 9 10

Beerus offered Gran the position of Universe 7’s Candidate God of Destruction, declaring that Gran could eventually equal or surpass him. Gran refused because a true God of Destruction’s life is linked to a Supreme Kai’s, but Beerus’s killing intent forced him to accept. Gran was formally given a God of Destruction-style outfit and became Beerus’s disciple and successor candidate. 11

His arrogance is supported by extraordinary ability, but it also makes him petty and insecure. Beerus lied to Gran about the gap between their strengths to prevent Gran from becoming overconfident and to preserve his own status as the strongest God of Destruction. 20

Despite his harsh treatment of others, Beerus becomes deeply invested in Gran. He trains Gran through sparring, refuses to bring him into hostile divine meetings before he is ready, and nearly kills Quitela for arranging an ambush against his candidate. 13 102 184
