Unknown Fear

A scream rang out.

Several people hurried downstairs again.

Li Dan did not follow them down. He examined how Calami had died. His internal organs had been torn out alive, but his brain was completely intact.

He thought it really might be the Midnight Person. He had initially assumed it was a demon that liked eating human brains, but it seemed he had guessed wrong.

Mike and the others had played several supernatural games earlier, yet nothing had happened. Everything had been normal.

Li Dan had naturally lowered his guard, but he had not expected the final game to go wrong.

He did not know much about this Midnight Person.

Mike crouched down, excitement in his voice.

"The Midnight Person is here. Its favorite way of killing people is to rip their hearts out bit by bit."

Jessie's little heart had never been particularly steady. Startled by that, she immediately cried, "Mike, are you crazy? Calami is dead! What Midnight Person? A murderer must have snuck in!"

"I'm calling the police!"

Jessie picked up her phone to call the police. The number had barely gone through when she saw the zero bars of signal, and she completely broke down.

"Fuck! This shitty phone has no signal again!"

Jessie decided that once she got back, she would definitely replace her phone.

Li Dan was already used to phones having no signal. Sometimes, it really was not the phone's fault.

The moment a supernatural incident appeared, phones were essentially useless. They would most likely be affected, so being unable to make a call was perfectly normal.

"Li, what should we do now?" Jennifer clung to Li Dan's arm, her ample chest pressed against him as she refused to let go.

"Let's go downstairs and take a look first." Before leaving, Li Dan called to Mike. "Come with us, Mike. It isn't safe for you to stay here alone."

Calami had died because he had been alone.

Holding a candle, Mike looked slightly crazed. "As long as the candle doesn't go out, I'll be fine. You go ahead. I want to see the Midnight Person's true face."

Good advice could not save someone determined to die. Li Dan truly did not believe a single candle could keep the Midnight Person away.

"If there's danger, remember to scream or make some noise."

Mike said, "Buddy, trust me."

Li Dan went downstairs with Jennifer and Jessie.

Xiao Shuai and Da Shan were looking for someone, because the black-haired girl had disappeared.

She had been screaming just moments ago, and it had been less than half a minute since everyone went downstairs. It was impossible for someone to suddenly vanish under those circumstances.

Xiao Mei clamored about leaving. She did not want to look for the black-haired girl anymore.

Xiao Shuai had thrown up all over the upstairs floor earlier and only wanted to go home now. But a cold wind blew outside, and just as they were about to leave, a torrential downpour began.

Even so, several people still insisted on leaving.

Even if they had to brave the storm, they did not want to stay in the same house as a deranged murderer.

In Xiao Shuai's eyes, the killer could only be a psychopath, not some Midnight Person. Mike had played so many games earlier without anything happening. How could something suddenly go wrong just because it was said to?

"Jessie, come with me. It isn't safe here."

Facing Xiao Shuai's invitation, Jessie shook her head and refused. After what happened last time, she felt that even if there really was a murderer, staying by Li Dan's side was safest.

Xiao Shuai did not force her. He grabbed the keys and led Xiao Mei and the blonde girl outside. They opened the door, ran through the rain to the Jeep parked in the yard, and drove away, unwilling to stay another second.

Da Shan did not leave. He was something of a school bully, but after Li Dan beat him up last time, he had become Li Dan's little follower.

Li Dan watched the Jeep disappear into the rainy night.

He did not stop them. People who wanted to leave could not be held back, and trying might even turn them into enemies.

The relentless rain and cold wind outside showed no signs of stopping.

Li Dan had the feeling that something was dividing them.

Their original group of ten had now splintered apart, as if something were trying to pick them off one by one.

If Li Dan had been an ordinary person, he definitely would not have let Xiao Shuai and the others leave. Generally speaking, the more people there were, the safer they would be. There was safety in numbers.

Then they would gather in the living room and go nowhere. Even if they had to use the bathroom, all ten of them would go together.

Of course, that was an ordinary person's method.

Li Dan was no longer ordinary, so he did not care whether Xiao Shuai and the others stayed or left. A few more or a few less made no difference.

They returned to the living room.

Only Li Dan, Jennifer, Da Shan, Jessie, and Mike upstairs remained now.

Calami was dead, and the black-haired girl had vanished.

They had turned the old house upside down and still could not find her. Though no one said it aloud, they all knew she was most likely already gone.

Perhaps it was because the house had fallen into disrepair over the years.

When they had turned on the lights earlier, the bulb flickered once before burning out completely. Everyone could only sit around the table in the living room, relying on candles for light.

Li Dan had just looked out the window. The few nearby houses were all pitch-black.

There were no traces of any other existence on the Ghost Card, either.

Gradually, Li Dan was starting to lose patience. Are you playing hide-and-seek with me?

Li Dan did not intend to waste any more time. If the demon truly wanted to play hide-and-seek with him, it would be hard to find.

He stood up and said, "Let's see if Mike is still there. Once we find him, we'll leave."

"Whatever you say, boss." Da Shan had no objections and took the lead.

After discussing it, the five of them went back up to the second floor.

Fortunately, Mike was fine. Unfortunately, Mike was soaking in the bathtub alone, and when Da Shan pulled him out, he seemed completely deranged.

"Mike, how did you end up like this? Hey, buddy, say something!" Da Shan grabbed Mike by the collar and shook him hard.

Mike stared at Da Shan with unfocused eyes and grinned foolishly.

Da Shan turned to Li Dan. "Boss, what do we do now? Mike seems crazy."

"Carry Mike first. Let's get out of here."

Mike had been perfectly fine just moments ago, yet now he looked like a patient who had escaped from some mental institution.

The sight reminded Li Dan of someone from Grave Encounter.

Since the boss had spoken, Da Shan could only shoulder the burden of carrying Mike.

Jessie went to open the door. Though she clearly remembered it had been open when they entered earlier, she did not think much of it.

Da Shan carried Mike at the front. Li Dan and Jennifer were in the middle, while Jessie walked last.

The moment they left, a tremendous force slammed the bathroom door shut.

Bang!

Jessie screamed in fright, because she clearly remembered that she had been the last one out.

Jennifer was better off, merely turning into an ostrich and curling up in Li Dan's arms. She truly believed it now, and she was terrified.

Da Shan said with a shocked expression.

"Holy shit, did you see that? The door closed by itself?"

Li Dan frowned. "I saw it. Ignore it. Let's leave first."

They hurried downstairs, opened the door, and got into the car.

Ignoring the pouring rain, Da Shan put Mike in the back and sped down the highway.

Even though Da Shan was a huge man, he still felt afraid when facing something unknown.

Fortunately, that thing did not seem to follow them. They returned to their respective homes as they wished, and everything seemed to go back to normal.

Li Dan looked out at the pitch-black night, wondering when exactly "it" had appeared. Even now, he could not determine what that thing was.

He took out the Ghost Card. It was still completely blank...

No!

Li Dan suddenly jolted awake. He remembered that the Ghost Card had shown traces of a demon's existence. It could not possibly be blank.

Cold sweat drenched his back as he nearly frantically chose Diamond Four in his mind.

"Fusion, Evil Spirit Wendigo!"
