Leaving the Bureau

At three in the morning, the night wind carried a damp, chilling fog. Li Dan raised a hand to adjust his collar, his fingertips brushing against the icy fabric.

This was a sensation he could never experience as a demon.

He took out his phone and glanced at the screen. The glow lit up his sharply defined profile as he raised an eyebrow and looked back over his shoulder.

Blade Head stood there in silence, the triangular blades covering his head reflecting a cold gleam. Even his breathing was nearly inaudible, as if he were a lifeless war machine.

"It's already pretty late. Want something to eat?"

Li Dan's tone carried a hint of deliberate teasing.

Blade Head remained in the same pose, tilting his head slightly as he silently watched Li Dan.

The faint scrape of blades rubbing together was especially clear in the quiet night, only making the silence feel heavier.

Li Dan waved helplessly. He had finally tried to be funny for once, only to lose so completely.

"All right, I'm not that hungry either..."

He walked over and lightly tapped Blade Head's helmet with a finger, producing two dull knocks.

"Did anyone ever tell you that you don't have a single humorous bone in your body?"

Blade Head was like a mute. Li Dan found it utterly boring.

Li Dan would have to look around later for more things similar to Ghostfire.

The success of Ghostfire and the Wendigo had given Li Dan an unprecedented interest in this sort of supernatural existence. Unfortunately, aside from the Ghostfire from Insidious, he had yet to encounter anything similar.

Maybe I can ask the Bureau later. There might be plenty of good stuff hidden in their containment vault. Li Dan turned and headed toward the Unicorn
