Background / History

The sect appeared in Annan Prefecture three years before its first known encounter with Wang Xuan. It initially professed a mission of showing compassion to the world and helping those in need, teaching faith in the Holy Mother of Pity Life as protection from calamity. Because the Great Yuan Dynasty did not restrict religious belief, it was not initially suppressed. Its true nature was exposed after a large-scale sacrifice to the Holy Mother used human beings as offerings. 10 11

By the events in White Water County, the sect had established multiple strongholds and infiltrated local institutions. Its members abducted women and children for Blood Sacrifices, operated an underground altar beneath Zhou Laifu's estate, and had placed agents including Lu Qing and Chief Standard Bearer Xu Kui inside the military camp. 21 31 34 37 39

Wang Xuan's destruction of Zhou Laifu's ritual led him to uncover a larger network of sacrificial sites. These included an underground altar that drained Demon corpses to form a Blood Demon Pearl and the main altar in Chillshadow Gulch, where the sect prepared the Banquet of Ten Thousand Demons. 35 37 40

The Chillshadow Gulch operation was devastated after Wang Xuan destroyed the Human Pill altars and Li Qingyi killed the apparent Bewitching Envoy. Later information cast doubt on that figure's identity: the Demon Slayer Division concluded that it was likely a puppet rather than a genuine Bewitching Envoy. 45 47 215 263

Beliefs and Practices

The sect reveres the Holy Mother of Pity Life. Its adherents call themselves believers of the “Holy Sect,” seek the Holy Mother's blessing, and believe devotion can grant power. 22 31 35

• Blood Sacrifice — A ritual fueled by human life and blood, with a stated preference for women, virgins, and infants. 11 21 22
• Demon blood transplantation — Members mix human and Demon blood, then use Blood Sacrifices to exchange blood and gain power. Repeated use erodes the mind and produces Demon-Humans. 11
• Demonization — Stimulating Demon blood temporarily increases strength; most users lose their minds and become killing-driven Demons. 11
• Human Pills — Martial Practitioners with special bloodlines are captured as high-value sacrifices. They can be offered to the Holy Mother for greater power. 34 41
• Soul-Devouring Mark — A bloodline-deep mark used to designate and track a Human Pill. It can be removed by killing its planter or through the intervention of an Innate Stage Martial Path expert. 34
• Blood Demon Pearl — A pearl condensed from drained Demon blood. Revered as a Holy Pearl, it can cleanse the five internal organs, raise cultivation, and serve as an offering for the Banquet of Ten Thousand Demons. 35
• Blood Offering Seed — A more dangerous control method planted in Wang Xuan by the Holy Mother through the Unborn Demon Emperor's puppet. Once fully merged with the heart, it turns its host into a puppet and a portal through which the Holy Mother can descend. 219 242

Holy Mother of Pity Life

The sect's deity and ultimate authority is a top-tier Netherworld powerhouse. She is capable of directly acting through marks and seeds placed upon targets, and intends to create Blood Servants or select a reincarnation vessel from exceptionally gifted candidates. 100 101 242

When enraged, she manifests as a colossal lotus-seated figure with a thousand arms and a thousand heads, radiating an intensely Yin and evil aura. 244

Bewitching Envoys

Bewitching Envoys are core sect figures and spokespersons of the Holy Mother. They can implant the Soul-Devouring Mark and oversee major sacrifices, including the Banquet of Ten Thousand Demons. 34 40 215

The figure encountered in Chillshadow Gulch commanded hundreds of Demon-Humans and prepared ten Blood Demon Pearls, but was later suspected to have been a puppet instead of a true Bewitching Envoy. 40 41 215 263
